Printing is full of typos
I love this author and am enjoying the book but this printing has more errors and typos than any book I’ve ever read. And I read a lot of books. It is distracting when reading. What a shame that the printing company did not give this brilliant author the care and attention to detail she deserves.

Typos everywhere
I have never read a book with even a tenth of the typos that are in this one. It's like no-one has proof read it at all, and it's not minor things.

Brilliant novel by Native American author.
This is Louise Erdrichs best novel and a very important story about the injustice and discrimination faced by Native Americans in Montana during the 1950s in America. It is based on fact and an attempt by a Mormon US Senator to pass a bill in the 1950s to disenfranchise Native Americans and take their land on reservations in Montana. Great characters good story and an important subject matter that demonstrates the struggles Native Americans have had to endure to hang onto their culture, traditions and land in the US in the post war period. Based on the life of her Grandfather who engaged in this struggle to protect Native American rights and treaties and to keep hold of their land. Easy to read but beautifully written with fully developed and interesting characters. I loved this novel. It was enjoyable , illuminating, educational and very different.

Superb
I'd never read any of L Erdlich before, but i will now. Set in Minnesota, this is a beautifully written story about love, friendship, coming of age, and redemption. It's moving, but also very very funny. I learned a lot I didn't know about the appalling treatment of the Native Americans by the religious right (what a surprise....) And all of it is based on letters that her own Grandfather - a Chippewa Tribe member - wrote.

Piercing insight and unforgettable characters
Such a beautifully crafted and well-told story of a defined period in history and a real struggle set against the everyday realities of life on a reservation in the 1950s. The warmth of the writing and the regard for the characters really comes through and you care for the full range of people and circumstances that happen here. It really transports you to a time and place that is exquisitely drawn.
