Brake guide pins and pads lubricant
I purchased this 3M Clear Silicone Paste (#08946) to use on my brake guide pins and the back of my new brake pads I would be installing. The delivery of this product was quick and without problems. The plastic bottle's lid has a brush attached underneath that is used to apply the silicone paste to your particular job. It is a heavy paste, about the consistency of jelly you would use on bread (do not use this silicone paste on bread!). It worked well for my brake guide pins and pads. I have used it on my electric gate opener arm and the rubber bulb on my antifreeze tester....all with good results. It should come in handy for other lubrication needs around the home (door hinges, tools, electrical contacts, O-rings). It is a thick paste, so it has to be spread with the brush on your project, but it won't run off. If your "project" can't come apart, this is probably not what you need, as a silicone spray would be more appropriate. While this paste is not completely clear, it most closely resembles in appearance the clear silicone caulk you would use for sealing cracks around the home (but this doesn't harden like caulk does). For the purposes I have used it for so far, I have been pleased. The price for a bottle of silicone was the only thing about this product that made me think twice about purchasing it. Seemed a little expensive....but it should last a while!

Yes it is mandatory
If you open a vehicle electrical connector, you better use some of this when you reconnect it. Also for lamps & bulbs. It removes air and prevents water intrusion to the connection. Therefore eliminating most causes of failure.

Get it for brake caliper slide pins (street car use) and car battery terminals!
I originally got this paste for brake caliper slider pins but have since used it to protect car battery terminals and trailer lights connector. It is a lot thicker than typical silicone and is quite tenacious. It has worked well in all of these applications so far. What's really nice is that this silicone paste actually helps condition & preserve rubber boots and seals on the slide pins of brake calipers. Other brake lubes don't do that and can actually cause them to swell. I also put a bit of this silicone paste on the outside of the rubber boots. That said, I would NOT recommend putting this silicone paste directly on the brake pads. It has a service temperature of -40°F to +400°F (as per 3M spec sheet). At 570F it catches fire. Brake pads, under stress of repeated stops, can reach 1000F or higher. Even though you're not likely to get anywhere near 1000F on the street, you should still use a high temp brake lube for them (copper, aluminium, etc) on the pads. Calipers are usually thick heavy pieces of metal and can soak up a lot of the heat before overheating, so you're unlikely to overheat this paste in your caliper slide pins unless you take your car to the race track. And in my experience to date, this paste works better on the slide pins than your standard brake lube.Update from 2020 (3 years later): i use this Silicone paste on brake caliper slide pins, battery terminals and a variety of O-rings (watches, water filters, etc). The silicone paste really helps keep the pins and bolts from sizing and is still perfect consistency on the slide pins when I take brakes apart a year later where normal anti-sieze has usually turned into crud by then. By the way, for high performance brake pads that heat up quickly in "spirited" driving I use Permatex Silicone Ceramic brake lubricant since it's rated to 3000F.
