Survived Hurricane Irma
Update: Its that time again, and I was just here looking for a refresher on how to use this radio in advance of hurricane season. I thought I would update my review since its been a while. I fully charged this radio after Hurricane Irma in Sept. 2017.This radio has been in my go bag in my trunk in the dark since Winter 2017/2018. Without the weather alert feature, it has two bars of battery left. The clock is way off, but I don't think I ever set it correctly. I added some labels with reminders of the wx alert and the two closest stations to my home/work (the quick start reference sticker came with it), and a carabiner to easily clip it to my bag. I still really recommend this radio. I am sure there are better radios out there with the weather alert feature, but this one serves its purpose and is not used as a regular radio in between storms. My needs are that its low priced, small, lightweight, and works when needed without power (multiple power sources- crank, solar, batteries). Photos are attached. Original: I ordered and received this weather radio right before Hurricane Irma hit Florida (where I live). It did exactly what I hoped it would do- we were able to track the storm without electricity, and the emergency alerts went off when tornadoes touched down nearby. If fact, we had several tornadoes during that night, and I ended up turning off the alert because it kept waking my 3 year old son, who ended up sleeping through most of the storm, blessedly. The alerts are loud as crap. I stayed up listening for tornado alerts on the radio so we could take cover if needed, but I didn't want to wake him unnecessarily. We had no power starting around 8pm (around the same time as the tornadoes dropped), and this thing kept chugging through the next three days with no power. We did not use it to charge cell phones, so I can't say how that would've worked, but we really didn't need them, the whole state was out. Once the storm passed, I tossed it in my trunk and forgot about it. 5 months later it still works. It has not even been in the sunlight, it was inside a backpack, power on but radio off (and alerts off too). I'm just starting to evaluate our emergency supplies for this season and remembered this little guy. I'm planning to charge it up fully, and keep it in my bedroom with alerts on for the upcoming tornado/hurricane season. Hurricanes call ahead, but tornadoes don't. My cell phone goes off for most tornadoes, but during a hurricane there's widespread power outages and no cell service, so you won't get the alert. I'm so thankful for this little radio and would recommend it to anyone looking for one. It could save your life.

Great Device even when there is NO EMERGENCY
After some crazy storms recently, along with ridiculous power outages that no one seemed to want to fix until a court order, I decided to up my game and get a little more prepared. This radio is just one small step in my planning, but it's pretty awesome. An emergency radio is only good if it works when you really need it. And that' the beauty of this thing - this radio is super useful even when there are no emergencies in sight. First, it's a rechargeable LED flashlight. It's bright, and since it's an LED, the battery can power it for over many many hours. Nice. I can use it while walking the dog in the neighborhood, or looking under my dishwasher for that pesky intermittent leak. Secondly, it's a cell phone charger. I can use this on a job site when I need a little extra juice in the field. Again, that's something that I can use frequently. And then there is the super-bonus: it's an AM/FM/Weather radio with digital tuner. It sounds good and pulls in good signal thanks to its decent antenna. Oh, almost forgot: it's a clock. Not an alarm clock, but a basic digital clock. (An alarm clock and WWV-B time sync would be a nice and easy addition for the next edition) Then there is the very best part: it's great for emergencies even when you lose power for a week: - It charges with solar, and it even SHOWS you when its charging with solar via an LED - It charges with a crank, for when or where the sun don't shine. - It can also be charged with pretty much any cell phone charger. Even if I never have to use it in an emergency situation, I know that it will still see plenty of good use. On the battery: Yep, it has a good sized rechargeable Lithium battery inside, conceptually like the rechargeable battery of a cell phone. I suspect that the battery will last many years (this will see many fewer battery cycles than my iPhone), and the battery is user replaceable. The battery does seem to have a proprietary connector, but replacements seem to be reasonably priced and available from several sellers. I think Midland wanted a "gift that keeps earning income", but I would have just used a standard "18650" battery and holder that makes it more useful and easier for the user. All that said, I suspect that I will never actually have to replace the battery. The size: this thing is a sized a bit like four sticks of butter.

There are two different tuning steps for AM (or MW) used worldwide and are incompatible - 10kHz and 9kHz. 10kHz USA and 9kHz Europe, Middle East and Australia. The unit that shipped to me was the US model with 10kHz steps so couldn't receive signals in the UK due to being off-frequency. If trying to tune to Radio 5 on 693kHz, the closest you can get is 690kHz so the signal is noisy because you are off frequency. So people may think they can't hear anything on MW/AM. I'm not giving it 1 star because the radio itself is really nicely designed and made. I would prefer to keep but I need reliable MW coverage. The fact that it uses a standard rechargeable battery is a really neat touch which means you can have a backup charged and ready. The construction is really good quality. I don't think the NOAA function works in the UK but that isn't of interest to me.
