A Much-Needed Product With Just a Few Flaws
This thin hardcover is indeed a comprehensive rule book for 'Mech-only combat in the original BattleTech tabletop game. It clears up a lot of confusion about certain rules, some of which had widely persisted for years.I myself was operating under the misconception that, when assigning critical hits by slot, when the lower menu is rolled and only one item is present and subject to critical hits, then it automatically sustains that rolled hit. Though the game ran quicker for us as a result of this misconception, it also damned certain designs to being far more susceptible to ammo explosions than if the procedure had been carried out correctly, as detailed in this book. And that's not all. One misconception was so pervasive that they literally changed the rule for resolving the process altogether to match the longstanding, popular alternative method. I didn't really like that (I was one of the supposed "few" who was running things correctly as intended by the old rules), but it's not really a consequential change, so I'll get over it.It's still an imperfect product filled with misspelled words, missing periods and a few vague explanations. For example, the MP cost for lateral shift is shown correctly on the diagram, but the explanation in the text suggests there is "no extra cost" to shift at all (which would make no sense). Common sense would dictate the extra MP cost is appropriate as it always has been, but the text is misleading in this case.Regardless, this is an excellent product to have at the table for straight BattleTech 'Mech-to-'Mech combat. It sure as hell is a lot lighter than Total Warfare, and offers various and sundry optional rules and tips and tricks to make the experience that much more enjoyable for the avid player of the game.

Beautiful book, NO INDEX!! Really??
I would LOVE to give this book 5 stars, but the are a lot more than 'just a few' flaws, which I will detail here.First the good:- Its gorgeous. The layout is very appealing, the binding strong, and the thickness of pages means that it willstand up to heavy rules referencing, which is something that's going to happen with a game this complex.- The rules are clear. As has already been stated in other places, many misconceptions or unclear rules havebeen cleaned up, and that's great for smooth play. Now the bad:- Horrifically, in a rules book this complex, there's no index. I can't think of anything that's more annoying that fora game designer to publish a complex set of rules and then FAIL to provide an index.- There's a table of contents. The listing is no substitute for an index, but one would THINK that might be useful forlooking this up, except its NOT because almost all pages are off by 1 page, or 2 if there's a chart page. Ridiculous- While the rules are very clear, some rules are missing. I know there's no construction rule, but for clarity, including majorcomponents rules would be very useful. The XL engine rules are absent and mentioned no where in the book. I know this is truebecause I have the PDF and XL Engine search returns no results. I really love the look of the book and the rules, but for the reasons above, I have to say this is very disappointing.
