I may have help restore my sense of umami (savory) taste and it tastes pretty good
Update 10-Aug-2020My enjoyment of protein is so much better. I am not back to normal but I can taste meat better now. The change was almost immediate and it has lasted. I have no idea if the tea did the trick or it was a coincidence. This is what happened. We had a family favorite meal: fajita chicken. It wasn't great but I ate it. Then the tea arrived. After the tea maybe a day or so, I had left over fajita chicken and it seemed to taste much better. I was skeptical so I kept testing. Pizza had been an old favorite but had lost its savoriness. I am happy to report I enjoy pizza more now. Same for hamburgers. I am drinking a glass of this as I write this update. Please do not assume my experience will be your experience. This is entirely anecdotal. This might have been complete coincidence. However, if any one has been looking for something to help recover their sense of umami (savory) taste following major surgery this tea is certainly something I would recommend trying.I was 7 months post surgery when I tried the tea. I was told my taste would change. It had, dramatically. It has also slowly come back, but will probably never be all the way back, to normal. Please don't assume this will be a miracle cure. Your body will need time to heal and come back to normal. The original review follows:I am writing to talk about the flavor. I bought this to try and treat my lost off umami taste. I read an article that kelp tea is a treatment that might help restore it . I will come back and report on that aspect later.pros: I like the tastecons: Expensive teaI was worried about the comments about the horrible taste. I am really happy to say this tea isn't bad at all. I've had to choke down chicken broth to prepare for medical procedures and this is so much better than plain chicken broth by a 1000 times. it is slightly salt but it doesn't taste to me like the ocean. It has a nice taste and I found my self drinking it willingly. I just finished the first cup and I want more already.Fair warning. My taste buds are not normal yet.I did not receive anything for this favorable review.

A light, umami alternative to heavy broths
I’ve been drinking this tea for a couple of decades (since I was in my early 20’s). My family to used to make fun of me for buying it, because to them this tea is for “jitsunen” (older people). I’m not sure why it has this connotation to them, as my young children love it - they’re constantly stealing my tea when I leave a cup out. I often add it to a cup of genmai cha (roasted rice with matcha) and it tastes a lot like ochazuke (rice soup).I typically fast for half of the day and sip on this, it tastes like a lightly briny, umami broth with a little bit of ume here and there. It’s a comforting experience.Refill bags are a steadfast item in the Japanese market. I like to buy refills for my instant dashi broth granules and body wash and shampoo. Here in the states, it’s hard to find the refill bag for this tea, so I have lots of the little red tins the tea is initially sold in. I’ve used them to organize tiny objects (like Bobby pins or safety pins), but for a couple dollars more than the 40 g tin (which is only half full, mind you), you get to refill the entire tin to the top with this one bag. While I’m thrilled to find this product available with free shipping, it’s worth noting that the delivery time is lengthy. As soon as my bag arrived, I should have ordered another one.

Ume tea is not my cup.
The quality and value for money of this tea are great as many other mentioned. However, I did not know this tea, despite some processing, tastes really like real ume tea! This can be certainly appealing to ume tea lovers, not for me.

It was small but it was good value for money. When I thought it was umecha, it was ume kelp tea.

Great, but ume flavor weaker than I remember
I grew up with this stuff, and have been missing it like crazy. The kombu tastes the same, but the ume flavor is weaker than I remember.Ultimately, it isn't a big deal as I can just add umeboshi to my cup or bowl (have with rice, pour hot water over it to have ochazuke), and I get the ume flavor.Great kombucha, I highly recommend
