A great author, and a great book
I have read many books by this author, and have yet to find one I don’t like. Chicken Sunday is no exception. It is a beautiful story that is worth sharing. As a retired teacher, I often read it to my students and re-bought the book to keep in my home so that I could read it to my grandchildren.

Chicken Sunday Love
Patricia Polacco is a national treasure! Her books are mostly based on real life and her illustrations are heavenly. In just a few words children learn life's truths. Adults remember them and silently weep happy tears. I know you love your children and grandchildren...I know of no finer books to place in their heart's library. My grandprincess says Ms Polacco's books are her favourites!

Another Polacco book that touches your soul
CHICKEN SUNDAY is another one of my favorite Polacco books. This is a fabulous and emotionally touching story of an interracial friendship and the children's journey of love and service. Young Patricia (who has written another great episode about her rich and colorful life) and her two best friends Stewart and Winston (who happen to be black) want to buy the boy's gramma (Eula Mae) a hat that she has wanted but could not afford to buy. Since the death of her beloved babushka, Eula Mae also serves as Patricia's surrogate grandmother. The children witness an act of racism on the hat shop owned by the Holocaust survivor Mr. Kodinski. They were going to ask Kodinski for a job to raise the money to buy Eula Mae her favorite hat. Mr. Kodinski sees the children and assumes that they are responsible for the act of violence. Ultimately, the children redeem themselves by making Pysanky eggs for Mr. Kodinski to sell in his store. He tells them the story of his life and then gives the trio the hat. Naturally Eula Mae is thrilled.CHICKEN SUNDAY is named after the chicken dinner that Eula Mae feed the children every Sunday after Church. This is another multi-cultural book teaching children that it is okay to have friendships with people who are different. Incidentally, Patricia remains close to these boys to this very day. It also exposes children to different types of racism. This book has a wonderful lesson for children and adults.

Great Book
I bought this used, but it still came in good condition! There were no rips or tears in any of the pages. My professor used this book as an example of how we can introduce Easter or the concept of different cultures. As a teacher, anyone could easily incorporate a lesson on cultures with the psanky eggs mentioned in the book. The story and the overall moral of the story is great to introduce to children as well! The children make psanky eggs to save money for a hat that a special old grandma of theirs has always wanted. Morals could also be introduced through this book as well. There are specific concept words too. The old grandpa in the story is also a jewish man who happen to flee during the World War II, so civics can also be introduced. :)

a happy accident checking this one out at the library
One of my all-time-favorites now, that started with a happy accident checking this one out at the library. Just saw it on the display shelf and liked the cover so we gave it a shot. Beautiful story and illustrations, I cried as I read it. Now we are huge fans of the author and give this particular book to friends as gifts. Good, good stuff right here.

It has surpassed my expectations inasmuch as there is so much to glean from its pages - love, acceptance
I have purchased this book with the intention of sharing it with my 4th and 5th grade students, which I am doing presently. It has surpassed my expectations inasmuch as there is so much to glean from its pages - love, acceptance, honesty, creativity and so much more. "Chicken Sunday" is a must read for elementary teachers and a must have in one's personal or classroom library. Patricia Polacco has done an excellent job in providing not only an entertaining and enjoyable story, but also a source of inspiration and life lessons for people of any age.
