Very good investment
I've used this ERV for over a year. It does everything it was advertised to do. You will need DIY skills to install it.

So much fresh air so quite
Man this thing is great!! Such fresh air. No smell at all for me! Really quiet!Living in a well sealed tiny house I've been plaged with air quality problems. Finally decided to go big for when I go home and I'm super glad I did. Everything feels so fresh now! Used to have CO2 buildup but not anymore!!

Improves IAQ
Well worth the investment if you have a well sealed home. Lowered my CO2 to under 800 from close to 2000 ppm.

Besides the toxic smell, it works OK.
After having the unit installed, I noticed a very strong smell in the house. It was a very toxic kind of smell, like the kind of smell from contact glue. Ironically, a machine that supposed to improve the indoor air quality, actually makes it worse.Since I invested so much money, getting the unit installed, I decided to let it run (redirecting the indoor air away from the house). After continuously running the unit for 4 days, the smell eventually was almost gone.Looking on the internet, this does not seem to be an isolated incident with Panasonic ERVs. I may end up looking for another Brand/Model, since I am unable to return this one.
