Excellent Set of Books for those who Want to Go into the Gaming Industry
I do enjoy a variety of nonfiction books, but this isn't normally a book that I would pick up. I'm not quite sure why I was attracted to it at my favorite book review site, but I think I was intrigued by the idea that people could actually do gaming stuff as a job/career and not just as a diversionary hobby. The author states that many gamers dream of turning their favorite pastime into a profession, but many do not last long in the industry. This book is actually a collection of three books by the author. The first one looks at gaming from the gamer’s perspective; the author describes the type of person who is best suited for being a game developer and the mindset required to stay the course in a competitive industry. The second book takes a look at the broader industry of gaming and game development. Finally, the last book discusses the different jobs available within the field. The book did have one little odd quirk to it that I found slightly annoying. This book is written by the author as stated on the cover, but for some reason every now and then, he breaks out into an italicized and indented section, as if he were speaking separately than the previous normal-font writing that is, of course, by him. Huh? It just seemed strange. If you are a gamer who dreams of developing games, this book would most likely give you the practical, real-world view of the industry as well as the ability to truly assess if this would be for you. It takes you from dreaming to seeing the possibilities of doing… to see if it is right for you and the path that might be best.I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Perfect for Students of Game Development
As a recent graduate, I had been looking for more resources to help me transition from student to a fully employed professional and Hardy LeBel's book was invaluable to me getting my first job. It's an essential read for anyone in the industry not just students or those looking to breaking in to the industry. The first section is the strongest in laying out what it entails to be a game developer and what is required. Overall, I recommend it.P.S. Hardy LeBel worked on Halo: Combat Evolved. The man has done enough already to earn a sainthood, and this is book is the same caliber.
