Edited to add (8/14/15) - I pulled my two shikibutons apart to allow my son to sleep in my room and he was set up on the tri-fold whilst I was sleeping on the roll-up. He told me that the tri-fold was way too hard to sleep on comfortably and to be honest I must agree with him. I am quite used to a firm mattress and I, too, found the tri-fold to be a bit too firm for my liking. I ended up sleeping for part of the night on the roll-up and found it to be firm but comfortable without the tri-fold, however I MUCH prefer the both of them together. The roll-up on top and the tri-fold as the base. I find that setup to be perfect for me. The firm plushness of the roll-up shikibuton is even better with the firm, dense padding of the tri-fold so if you think just one shikibuton would be too hard for you I suggest getting more than one and layering them.Let me preface this review by saying that I purchased this roll-up shikibuton to lay on top of the tri-fold shikibuton and I do not expect to use this alone as my bed. However, if my son decides to sleep in my room as he sometimes does I can easily take the roll-up one off and let him sleep on the tri-fold. I purchased two of these roll-up shikibuton and two tri-fold style shikibutons on August 6 and paid for expedited shipping and just received both packages yesterday afternoon (the 12th). They shipped from CA to NC. The tri-fold shikibutons came shrink wrapped together in a large square box and the roll-ups came shrink wrapped in a cylindrical cardboard box that was nearly as as tall as I am and about a foot in diameter. Upon taking them out of their wrappings there is a definite hay like odor. It smells pleasantly like the feed stall in a horse barn. The smell was solely on the roll-up shikibuton and, as of this writing, has dissipated noticeably though it is still present. I promptly laid out the tri-fold shikibuton on the floor and placed the roll-up shikibuton on top of it so that it could regain its shape (the tri-fold, being made of foam, did not require this). I was concerned that the roll-up would hang off of the tri-fold since I had not noticed at purchasing time that the tri-fold is several inches shorter than the roll-up. This has not been the case. The roll-up shikibuton looks to be exactly the same length as the tri-fold so I am happy about that. I purchased both twin and xl twin sheet sets to see which would work better and what I ended up doing last night was putting the twin fitted sheets on the roll up and simply tucking the excess betwixt the two mattresses. I then placed a flat sheet over that and my down comforter on top of that to act as the "kakebuton". Anything "xl" was unnecessary. The feel of the bed is difficult to describe. Both the tri-fold and roll-up have different "textures" to them though they are both firm. The roll-up is thick, dense but not heavy and firm and when pressed firmly it does not yield very much. The tri-fold is also very firm and feels very much like a good quality outdoor chair pad. The three sections are individually zippered and all three zippered sections are sewn together so you can remove the foam from its cover. When pressed firmly there is a little give but not too much and I imagine that a person's weight distributed over the whole mattress would yield a nice overall give without rocketing to the floor. The roll-up on top of the tri-fold feels lovely. There is a somewhat springy give and I do not find it to be too firm at all, however that is with both pieces and I will update my post should I have the chance to sleep on each singly. Size wise the mattresses both appear to be 29" W x 75" L and 3" D. I was able to snuggle with my eight-year-old daughter only when we lay facing each other and I had my arms wrapped around her. I would not be able to sleep like that though. I sleep on my back and, infrequently, my side so I needed the space and she has her own shikibuton set up to sleep on. The only way I can conceive of two people sharing this bed would be if someone who is as small (or smaller) as I am (5'2" 115lbs) were sleeping on their side with a newborn baby and they wrapped their arm over the top of the child. For any other scenario I would simply get a wider bed. For some reason that I've yet to fathom the roll-up has a zipper at the base of the cover yet is tufted and unable to shift out of its cover. Perhaps it had to do with ease of construction? I placed both sets of beds two feet apart so my daughter could hold my hand while she drifted off. The beds are directly on the carpet. I have considered getting a sisal, jute or bamboo rug to place underneath just to complete the look of the room though I find it to be unnecessary for any reason other than that. I would not use a tatami mat in NC since it is very humid, very hot and we have lots of bugs in this state. I really wanted one but reconsidered aft seeing what problems mold could wreak on a tatami. As for sleep, I was quite comfortable. I slept deeply and undisturbed as I usually am by my squirming, overly-warm daughter (hence, why I purchased two sets of beds) who seems to delight in invading my space. It was wonderful to be able to sleep without a forearm to the face or small head ramming into my rib cage. Heavenly! I woke with no back pain nor stiff joints. I feel great. I wish that I had bought these years ago. As I mentioned earlier in my post I shall update this further into my use of these and I shall try to upload some pictures of our setup. I purchased this futon a little over 3 months ago after deciding to try something new. I actually gave up the mattress and pillow I had been using and moved entirely to just this futon rolled out on top of a large yoga mat with a top-sheet and a few blankets. As per the recommendation of others, I roll up the futon every morning, rotate it 180 degrees once a week, flip it once a month, and hang it outside in the sun every few months. I have yet to notice any amount of compression in the futon's material, and it all seems to be holding up great.When I first purchased this item there was a noticeable sort of "grassy" smell to it. I never really minded it and honestly can't remember noticing it past the first week at most. As of this 3 month mark, there is absolutely no smell, but I'm sure it was gone long before that.As far as comfort goes, this futon is great for a single person sleeping on their back, but anything else may be uncomfortable to a degree. As a 6'4 guy, this futon is long enough to lay down comfortably without falling off one end or the other, but I hadn't realized how narrow it really was before I bought it. If you sleep with your arms sticking out (at all!), or you roll around a lot at night, buy a wider futon. And as far as sleeping on your side goes, this futon can work for it, but it's not great. It's thick enough to pull off short term, but if you have wide shoulders or lack a pillow, do not expect to sleep in this position.Also I should note that this futon arrives vacuum sealed and expands dramatically upon opening. If you think you may have to return this at some point, expect to re-vacuum seal it or pay for a giant box to ship it. But at only $70, it would make for a decent temporary guest bed for the odd guest or for short-notice trips.Edit: It has now been a year and a half. I have consistently rotated and flipped the futon as advised and it seems to remain as comfortable as it originally was. No signs of wear or torn fabric.Edit 2: It has now been 5 years since I started sleeping exclusively on this futon. Over the last few years I have not kept up with the recommended rolling up, rotating, flipping, and hanging outside. There have been multi-month long periods where the futon remained basically untouched on the floor aside from washing the sheets. I no longer remember how fluffy the futon was when it first arrived, so I cannot comment on if it's changed thickness over the last 5 years but otherwise it has held up fantastically. It's still comfortable and all the seams and straps are in great shape. I did end up buying a buckwheat pillow so I could sleep more comfortably on my side.I have grown very fond of a firm futon bed and can no longer sleep comfortably on soft mattresses as I feel like I sink into them and lose good sleeping posture. I will be buying a new bed soon and will be choosing a similar futon as it's base, but in a larger size.

Let me first start this review by saying I had another mattress from this manufacturer and used it for many years until my cat urinated all over it, and while I could get out the urine, the smell lingered. Make sure to use a waterproof cover if you have a cat that likes to urinate on things!But I've been using this mattress here for week now and it's everything I remember- perfect for a back sleeper, not too cushy, great for my spine.

I have been traveling with my futon in my car for the past 6 months and it’s been great.I have slept in my car with it, on the floor of shared hotels, at friends places on the ground, on couches that are a little too firm.Personally, as a side sleeper, when I sleep on the ground with it there isn’t enough padding for it to be an everyday thing for me, I need something a little softer.I did sleep on the carpet for an entire week once and just couldn’t get used to it.This futon has been a great buy and has paid for itself with the shared single bed hotel rooms when traveling with my brother.Definitely recommend, it lays rolled up in the backseat of my car most of the time, ready to help me sleep comfortably somewhere in a pinch, which is great as a digital nomad.

I have fibromyalgia, scoliosis and arthritis in my back. I have had back pain my entire life, and that's putting it mildly. After months of sleeping on an expensive Sealy mattress, I found myself completely out of work due to pinched sciatic nerves in the lower back and pinched nerves controlling muscle control in hands from my upper back. I was a mess for nearly six months. HOWEVER, I started using this bed and after about 2 weeks I noticed that my legs were getting much better and I was walking easier and longer before the nerves would start giving in and my hand issues corrected themselves almost over night! (I did get some back muscle pain for about a week which was difficult, but would choose that over not being able to type/hold cups/wash dishes/etc)After a solid month of sleeping on this thing I have next to no sciatic pain in either of my legs anymore. I have to really do some standing/walking before it is a problem. I used to get pain just getting out of the car and walking to the door, and would feel crippled by that alone, when going shopping (and I park in the handicap). Now, well, I can walk the whole store and it is more muscle soreness from not being able to walk a lot than nerve pain. I went six months without being able to grocery shop or go anywhere. Now it is almost completely fine!I'm a big guy, about 235 and 5'8". I sleep on this every night, no problems. I love it! It rolls up and goes out of the way easily so it is great for small spaces or if you are having to make sleeping arrangements with a partner. They do sell bigger ones in queen/full size which could be nice since these aren't very wide, but I can fit standard size pillows on it no problem. I absolutely love this thing. Shipping was much quicker than I expected it, by weeks! I wouldn't trade it for the world at this point. In fact, my girlfriend says that she is going to put some plywood on my side of the bed so I can put this on top when I spend the night! lol. I can't explain to people how awesome this has been.
