Pompeii: The History, Life, and Art of the Buried City

Good illustrations, very bad text
Dismally written, or I'd better say translated in English, since apparently the original texts were in Italian. This book features such an endless series of typos and badly written sentences that the reading experience becomes unbearable.Photos and illustrations are good, though.

The best book about Pompeii you can buy
I had the great fortune to see "A Day in Pompeii" at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. This exhibit was only brought to 3 museums in the entire United States before departing to Europe. Since that exhibit, my kids and I have been on the hunt for a great book on Pompeii. We have checked out several and I've bought a few until finally seeing this one. Not only are the photographs, quality of the book, and objects they are portraying top notch, but the writing is excellent. Beyond excellent. The final pages written about the volcano itself are part geology lesson about volcanoes, part what it would be like if you were in Pompeii on that day and you had not already escaped before the lapilli started to fall from the sky. I rarely give books reviews, but if this topic interests you at all, THIS IS THE BOOK TO OWN.
