Vermilion The Energy Plan: Eat Smart, Feel Strong, Perform at Your Peak

A 267-page book that could have been much shorter
Just a few useful things here and there, the rest of the book is just filled with tons of boring and repetitive little anecdotes.

A 'Must-have' for all athletes!
Not many specialists have both the expertise AND the skill of writing accessibly without dumbing down for the non-specialist, but James Collins is one of the few experts with both skill sets. Having had the privilege of 3 sessions with James in person (as a birthday present!), even before buying his book I knew that he had the nutritional expertise that, tailored to my physiology, has helped me to continue to qualify for Masters' Marathons on a 'good-for-age' basis: with his help Berlin 2018, London 2019; and to come: New York 2019, Boston 2020! How has this book added to the personal touches? In general terms it has consolidated my understanding of what James so patiently explained to me, supported by written, personalised plans; the visuals - not too many, but very well designed - support both understanding and quick flick-through reference; chapter 5 'Performance Plates: Different Fuels for Different Days' is an excellent stand-alone reference for the differences between high and low training days - without having to weigh every single item! Details in addition to personal consultation? Too many to list here, but my highlights are: the analogy of the body to a car (my partner is an F1 fan!) - my body deserves high octane fuel, as do yours! Realistic, replicable planning templates for meal times and types, especially p153: the weekly planner, so in keeping with scheduling running around real life: James is a realist, and knows that life demands can make this tricky. The section on travel is invaluable for any of you travelling abroad to mouth-watering events, and how best to maintain sleep rhythms when jet-lagged; chapter 14 on supplementation is a section that EVERYONE - athlete and non-athlete alike - must read. I am actioning the advice as I write! Finally: if like me the section on ageing has immediate relevance, read it: none of us like facing up to this fact, however, after a deep breath, what made it so pleasurable is the absolute certainty that we CAN all continue to do what we love. Age is NOT a barrier. And if, unlike me, you are lucky enough to buy the book at a younger age, and follow most of the advice most of the time, your athletic lives will be even longer-lived and successful than mine! I cannot recommend this book too much.

Good, if you're a beginner.
As someone very active and looking to adjust my nutrition plan, I was interested in the book and purchased it eventually. Although it provides great, solid information (although quite basic), it also confused me here and there. Lots of information is spread over the entire book, a bit more clarity and simplicity would have helped me more. Nonetheless, a good book for beginners.

Essential for training and life
This book is essential for any training programme but more broadly for general nutrition. It:* comprehensively explains your bodies nutritional needs in an accessible and informative way* gives you the skills to plan your meals based on your nutritional and exercise requirementsI feel full of energy since following this book. I can train more effectively, concentrate better at work and have more energy in my general life.It has helped me go from someone who had a disordered feast and famine approach to diet, which was exclusively focused on weight, to a sustainable and healthy plan which has left me stronger, fitter and healthy.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get control of their nutrition and feel better.
