Well written book about an actual event
I bought this book after watching the movie of the same name starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck. The movie was excellent and I highly recommend it. I'm at a loss as to why it did so poorly at the box office upon it's release. The book (and the movie) are about a Coast Guard rescue that occurred in the early 1950's off of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I'm a life long resident of the state and I'd never heard of it but apparently it's legend within the Coast Guard. It is an amazing story about real life heroes and the dangers of going to sea, even in the modern age. The book is very well researched and well written and covers both rescues that occurred (the movie focuses on just one of them) in great detail with no-nonsense writing and a fast moving story. I highly recommend both the book and the movie. It's an amazing story that most people have no idea even occurred but that you'll never forget once learning about it.

Sea Rescue

A wonderful insight into what it was like when people preferred dipping woolen gloves in the freezing water, because that was a better choice than bare hands. To cope with the conditions with the wind shield broken through, the toughness of all the coast guards, breathtaking. Dodgy oil tankers, 'back handers' to keep the ship inspectors quiet. Coast guards that braved the whole thing and found no-one to save, out of this world. The defining thing for me is the utter selfless humanity. Just hard people being asked if they can do the improbable. And they did. When I think of people whingeng about waiting in a queue of traffic, this book puts everything into perspective. I'm just glad I was not there when they found the man who had decided to stay on board one of the tanker halves and who died of hypothermia. That broke my heart to think of the complete inability to do anything for the situation. Just recalling parts of the book takes me to the place of sombre respectful silence
