The Sympathizer: A Novel (Pulitzer Prize for Fiction)

A historical fiction story about the fall of Saigon, identity crisis of a spy, a Communist sleeper agent in America, a story about refugees, perhaps this book can be brought under any of the above mentioned categories, and still someone could bring up another classification I haven't thought of.The story starts with a confession. Then goes a few years back to the time when the Northern Vietnamese Communists took over Vietnam and the pro-American southern Vietnamese were flown out of the country for the US. Among them was the protagonist who's a mole, a Communist posing as a close confidante of the southerner general. From there, the story goes both to the mole's childhood and his formative years growing up, to the current times in US and his actions and snitching of his Vietnamese brothers.This is a very dark comedy. The structure of the story so often reminded me Kurt Vonnegut's Mother Night (which I absolutely love). The themes are much overlapping. The difference here being the events and story here is pretty detailed. In fact, that could be the only complaint I have with this book. Some of the events were explained in a manner which can be excessive, although not in a manner that would take you away from the main story. But the end gets so bleak, and then later you realise it is just a very dark joke. It brings in one of the best parts of 1984.It took me more than a month to read it in full, partly because I was keeping busy, partly because it was taking me too long to read so I did not feel like reading (I know, a vicious circle). But man, was it worth it. Highly recommended if you have the time and energy to be invested.

C'e' tutto questo nel 'bastardo', figlio di un prete francese e di una vietnamita del nord, vietcong infiltrato da capitano dei servizi segreti del governo di Saigon, organizzatore dell'ultimo volo che lascia il Vietnam sotto il fuoco dei mortai vietcong e di cui ha selezionato i candidati. Vita da espatriato nella comunita' vietnamita di Los Angeles, amori, 2 omicidi per coprire la sua vera attivita', cosceneggiatore di un b-movie su una strage con stupro in un villaggio vietnamita di cui scopre vedendo il film di non essere citato nei credits, ritorna con un gruppo di Rambo in Vietman per fomentare (boicottare!) la controrivoluzione, catturato sottoposto a rieducazione in un campo di concentramento con i metodi della CIA: scosse elettriche luci accecanti deprivazione del sonno, la piu' terribile. L'aguzzino e' il suo migliore amico dal volto devastato dal napalm! Riabilitato viene costretto a riprendere la sua odissea da boat people con una percentuale di mortalita' prossima al 100%, portando con se i brogliacci delle sue confessioni che costituiscono il nucleo del romanzo. Stupefacente per autorevolezza facilita' di scrittura, saggezza orientale ironia veridicita' e credibilita' attestate dai riferimenti bibliografici citati nei ringraziamenti dovuti anche ai genitori testimoni di quegli eventi.Sono tornato da una settimana da Laos Cambogia e Vietmam: Ho Ci Minh city e' una metropoli dalla skyline occidentale vista di notte navigando sul placido Mekong i vietmaniti sono 94 milioni e si apprestano a superare il Giappone, sono giovani e hanno dimenticato la tragedia delle guerre non finite con la pace di Parigi ma continuate con l'invasione della Cambogia di Pol Pot il succesivo intervento cinese con altri 500.000 morti, nel Laos c'e' ancora il 60% di bombe inesplose lungo il sentiero di Ho Ci Mihn e le famigerate clusters bombs mutilano e uccidono ancora, drammatico il museo della guerra di Vientiane! Ho finito di leggere il romanzo al ritorno da questo viaggio col ricordo e la curiosita' di chi ha vissuto quegli anni e manifestato contro la guerra: no wars, no more ho scritto sul registro dei visitatori del museo di Vientiane con gli occhi lucidi di commozione, si sa noi vecchi...

Big fiction is back again. Excellent book exploring multi-faceted Viatnamese army members and their new conditions relocated back in Guam and the USA.
