Great guitar at this price point
This is a great guitar at that price point. Has very high quality tuners on it. A beautiful finish and a nice mellow sound, not quite as bright as a spruce top guitar but it is beautiful sounding. One reviewer mentioned that the original shipping box from Yamaha was badly torn, mine was also and I thought the guitar was damaged but when I took it out and looked at it there was not a scratch on it. I am amazed that that guitar was not damaged the way the box looked. My guitar came from cream City music in Wisconsin, they inspected the guitar and did a player set up on it before they shipped it. All that being said, this is not just a beginner's guitar this is for an intermediate guitar player. I'm sure you'll enjoy this guitar

A Yamaha Triumph!
A solid mahogany top, beautiful workmanship, charming sound and intoxicating beauty that will lead you into the guitar. Mellow and deep lows with an exacting midrange with bright but not overwhelming highs. Made from all Mahogany, this solid top guitar conjures soft jazz, quiet ballads and exacting accuracy for the occasional classical piece. It’s definitely a steel string guitar, but let your hands and heart control the soft tones that only Mahogany can provide. Mother of pearl inlay, newly designed scalloped bracing for the top design allows for truer tones, resonance and intonation. The stock tuning keys are accurate and snug, and produce no interference with the typically thin strings trusted by Yamaha. I selected .10 to 52. Nicely satisfied and proud to add this to a 38 year old collection of Yamaha guitars. The fit and finish is as nice as expected and will be a conversation starter. Highly recommend.

Very Good Value
I'm a loop artist and this guitar is ideal. This Yamaha is light weight with a beautiful.bright tone. I put in a pure mini pickup and it sounds superior to my other acoustic with the factory installed pickup. Frets are inset lower so you can set the action for smooth lead playing. It has a thicker neck too for firm gripping technique. It's not an all mahogany wood guitar, mostly spruce but very good tone. So glad to have a Yamaha back in the family.

Yamaha FG850 Solid Mahogany Top Acoustic Guitar
I have owned the Yamaha FG850 Solid Top Acoustic Guitar for 6 years now and it sounds better everyday! It has a warm tone and is not as loud as my Yamaha FGX5 Red label, which makes it perfect for late night practices. After spending $15 on new bones and working the frets smooths, it stacks up against guitars 4 times the price. The FG850 is what you would expect from a company with factories all over the world. Yamahas are undervalued by the guitar experts, but I love them because Yamaha knows how to build them right at a great price.

Decent guitar for the $
I immediately relpaced the saddle with a lower profile one of bone. The nut height is ridiculously high, so I will have to file it down. All in all it's a decent guitar for the $, as most guitars need similar work when new. The guitar is really pretty. The most amazing thing about this purchase is, that it arrived intact! Shiped in a triangular shipping box that was absolutely trashed-no padding or reinforcements whatsoever............come on Amazon...........

I like everything about this guitar it is one of the most beautiful guitars I know of it didn’t need a setup it plays easy and the sound is amazing the FG 850 is the best guitar I ever have played or owned I recently bought a guitar hand made in Canada it is very nice but needed a setup I have money so I also wanted the FG850 I didn’t want to like the Yamaha it is made in China but if you can only afford 1 guitar this is it it is equal to other guitars @ 4 times the cost this is my humble opinion take it for what it is worth

Best guitar out there at this price point? I say YES!
I bought this guitar after a gave my FG820 to my daughter because she loves it. The 820 is the best sounding guitar I’ve ever heard. I love the mahogany sound like the 820 had for back and sides and I noticed that the FG850 has a solid mahogany top also. It’s a beautiful guitar, has great projection and that mellow mahogany sound. Plays great just like the 820. Would definitely recommend. Great bang for the buck!
