what is improved/better about this version (opposed to the older/cheaper version) ?

I had one of these only a couple weeks back and there still seem to be some issues with them. I am not sure what the difference between models might be.

Yes it does auto-swap. They ALL do, and it's super annoying! SOLUTION: Add a usb TOGGLE switch! I use this one (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QTJZD99/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A888XNHK8N308&psc=1). Put this toggle switch between your usb switch and the computer, and leave the toggle switch OFF. That way, no matter what your other computer is doing (turning on, waking up, sneezing..), it won't register with the usb switch, and therefore will not cause an auto-swap. When you're ready to actually swap to the other computer, switch the TOGGLE switch to ON, and you're off to the races. It's just a way to mute the annoying auto-swapping of the usb switch. Works great for me.

Does this work with mice that have extra buttons? my mouse has 5 buttons (2 on the side). my current km switch doesn't work with those extra buttons.

It does. I am using it with a razer naga trinity and all the buttons work.

Anyone have success getting this to work with dual monitors?

There are different priced alternatives to choose from. This one cost more but had better reviews. Have been using it for three months to switch an HP printer between a Dell laptop from work and a Dell home desktop. The unit comes with the cables needed, takes a minute or two to hook up. Has green and blue buttons and one will light to indicate which computer will print.. Push a button to switch to other computer. It has worked perfectly since install.
