Did the task intended
Had a box of old camcorder tapes, a Sony camcorder and a PC. Bought this to be able to get the files direct from the camer and it worked fine. Instal needed to include the appropriate drivers, but this was pretty easy on the Dell PC I had. After that, it worked well and all the files were saved to disk.

Works Well on Older Hardware, Issues with Intel 12th Gen/ Windows 11
This card allowed me to capture footage off an old Sony Handycam Camcorder (model dcr-hc27e), which I almost thought lost forever, as modern computers don’t have FireWire ports (USB to FireWire adapters don’t work). However I could not get it working with Windows 11 with an Intel 12th Gen Processor (i7 12700K). Windows 11 recognised and installed the PCIe card drivers, however no software I tried could identify the camera (WinDV, VirtualDub, old version of Sony Vegas, Stoik Capture). I have read on forums potential lack of support with 12th Gen Intel CPUs and newer, so bear this in mind.In the end I borrowed a Dell Optiplex 7060 with an 8th Gen intel processor, installed the card with the low profile bracket and the camera is now recognised in some of the software I tried.I recommend using WinDV (free) to capture the raw footage in AVI format and then finding some de-interlacing software to convert to progressive scan for modern displays if you want better quality.Overall, very happy with this card but can be a nightmare to get working on newer computers.

Works fine with Win 11
Bought this to capture some old footage from our DV camcorder. Plug and play with Windows 11. Had to use a different cable as the one supplied didn't work, but that was no drama. Came with a low profile bracket, so that was handy as was fitting into a small form factor PC.Highly recommended.

Couldnt get it to work under esxi, all ok under W10
using this to capture my old Mini DV tapes, and save them onto DVD/NAS/Cloud backup.does what its supposed to do, works fine with adobe, and other freeware tools to capture and save to disk.installed on a proliant gen 8 microserver, comes with low form factor backplate, and a cable.perfect.

Does not appear to actually work with Windows 10!
One of the best inventions of modern times has to be USB (Universal Serial Bus)!It means we no longer have to work with awkward (at best) technology like Firewire!I won't bore you with a detailed explanation as anyone looking at purchasing knows the challenges of making redundant technology work with modern systems.Put simply I have been trying to assist my neighbour transfer some recordings from his old Sony video camera (uses physical tapes) to his PC.This should just plug into a spare PCI slot and then Windows will take care of the rest....?Nope!Not a chance Windows 10 will recognise this. After 2 hours and trying everything I know (and I have been working with PC's for a LONG time) I gave up and pointed him in the direction of a company that will do the digital transfer for you.If you have a really old machine (Windows 7 or earlier) this "might" work.Sorry, really can't recommend this.

Simple solution
I needed one of these to connect an old camcorder to my PC to save old videos to digital, and this helped perfectly. It provided Firewire to connect the camcorder and it did so simply and effectively. Nice fast speeds, and as you likely have a spare PCIe within your PC, it was simple to install.

Throw away the cable.
Installed card - zero issues.Connected to Panasonic camcorder with supplied firewire cable and had random disconnects. Replaced with original supplied 20+ years ago and transferred with mo issues.

Work in virtualised environment
I bought this card to offload my DV tapes onto disk and cloud storage. I have Win11 running in a Proxmox Virtual Environment (PVE). I wasn't sure if it would work but took a chance as the card was not too expensive. I had to enable IOMMU support in Proxmox and had to move the card into PCIe slot 1. After that, Win11 recognised the card and automatically installed the VIA 1394 driver. I saw other feedback so used a different cable. Once I had the video camera plugged in, the software (WinDV) recognised it and it's working fine.
