My favorite pipe lighter.
Probably my favorite pipe lighter and I’ll definitely be purchasing another insert.Unfortunately my Oldboy lighters now sit in the drawer.

Simple, cheap..err..inexpensive, and THE BEST for pipes
LOVE IT!I've have used all types of lighters, and matchs...mostly for pipes. This is the ideal pipe lighter. It's got that retro -Zippo look, and cult mistique, but that's not why I got it. OK, a little flimsier than days gone past. But I just needed a good pipe lighter. And this delivers.Works every time.I had many butane pipe lighters costing much more. They burn hot and can seriously burn the top of your pipe if you're not careful. And they inevitably all failed eventually; starting with being hard to light, to becoming non-functional.( Kudos to Xikar BTW, who, true to their word, will fix their lighters for free for life...but you pay shipping and wait a few weeks. However, I still use that one for cigars). But that one didn't do the job (for pipes) as well either...it has a hotter flame and doesn't have that cool pipe chimney, directing the flame into the bowl when turned sideways..the beauty of this design.I hesitated getting a Zippo having heard they impart that lighter fluid smell to your smoke. But as other reviews have noted, just follow these simple rules:1. Don't over fill with lighter fluid - remember less is more.2. Keep the wick short. Trim if necessary so flame isn't too high, although I didn't need to do this.3. Use a good brand of fluid. Zippo is recommended, but I use a generic brand (read."cheap") and I can't detect any lighter fluid taste in the smoke.4. And...very important...let the flame burn for around 30 seconds to let any fumes dissipate before touching to the tobacco.I believe that the story about fluid lighters imparting the fluid taste to the tobacco was started by cigarette smokers who didn't follow these rules, especially the last one. Or, if you're conspiracy minded, it was a rumor started by butane lighter companies. In summary, simple is best. This is a winner. No need to spend $ 50+ for a more expensive lighter unless you're more status conscious than practical.

Pricey but you get what you pay for.
Why are Zippos so expensive? They're like buying auto parts at the parts store, three different prices. Retail, Jobber and the sellers so called discount/store price. The sample I pulled out of the box had a little sticker on it, $29.95. In the Amazon sale page it was marked for $30.95 (crossed out) and on sale for $19.95. About as low as you're going to see it anywhere. Since I just bought a couple pipes, I needed something better than a Bic. I filled with some kerosene I hade left over from winter. Turns out it's not quite as easy to light as lighter fluid, and it burns with soot. So, once it runs empty, I'll get a can of lighter fluid. The lighter itself is the same great build quality you can expect from Zippo, although the case felt dirty and gritty when I first took it out of its box. Cleaned up nice though. Works as advertised for lighting a pipe!

A classic design by a classy company.
Zippo makes the best lighters. Durable, clean design with a warranty that can’t be beat. The pipe lights easily and can be filled quickly. For a pipe you need a yellow flame so you don’t scorch and damage the bowl. This lighter is perfect. A gentle yellow flame with a design to place it directly over the bowl. Excellent ! They stand behind their product…check out their warranty !

Works extremely well
With many lighters, it can be difficult to get the bowl to properly light on first attempt. With this zippo pipe lighter, as soon as I added fuel and tried it, worked well the first time. It's nice to be able to light the bowl on first attempt and not have to relight again. If you smoke a pipe, matches are the norm (at least for me) but aren't always convenient. This lighter works just as well, and doesn't blow out.
