Just a Dream

I teach third grade, and bought this for a science unit over conservation. This book is AMAZING and really makes you think. My whole team ended up ordering this book! It’s a favorite in our classroom!

In my fourth grade classroom we complete an author study on Chris Van Allsburg. Around Earth Day I had been told about Just A Dream and I ordered it to add to our collection. The illustrations are wonderful and the story is a great lesson as well as a fun Read Aloud. I highly recommend this book.

I have used this book as an Earth Week lesson in my classroom, and it has hit the mark each time. Followup lessonsincluded drawing a picture of what COULD happen if we don't take care of our earth, and what we SHOULD do toprevent that from happening.Van Allsburg takes a dreaming boy on a trip through time, showing him one catastrophic event after another. All of these were reversable by simple recyling, and caring for natural resources. The boy in the story awakens to find there is still time to become a part of the solution. No primary classroom should be without this book.Read-aloud interest level is ages 5-8. Reading level is grade 2.

One of my favorite books growing up as a child. Now my daughter will be able to enjoy this classic as well.

Another beautiful book by Chris Van Allsburg. Although it is about a dream he changed his usual style for one with more definition but which retained his trademark subtlety when one might have expected him to employ his usual more diffuse style. Enjoy it with your children and grandchildren.

My class loves this book and the pictures! It was a kick-off to our Environment Unit! I found some great resources online to go with it as well.

This is a story for all ages. The message is clear - everyone must do their bit for the planet and all the children I have read this to - 5-11 year olds have been able to understand it. Lots to talk about in the brilliant illustrations and if you teach there is a lot of follow up work you could do with your class.
