Buy it for the light, not the magnet.
UPDATE 2017-09-01: the day after I published my comments below (along with a three-star review), the seller (CZHLP) contacted me and offered to send a newer version of the lamp, which has a larger, more powerful base if I would update my review to reflect the newer version of the lamp. The newer version just arrived and is pretty much exactly what I expected when I purchased the item the first time. The on/off switch in the base feels much more sturdy and the magnet itself is very powerful. According to the seller, the old version had 60kgs of pull and the new version has 100kgs, and that increase in power makes a major difference.Consequently, I updated this review to be five stars. And not just for the improved quality of the lamp, but for the very timely service. I definitely recommend both the lamp and the seller.Old review (for posterity):As other reviews have noted, the powered magnet base is basically useless. The flimsy on/off switch mechanism is cheap and loose-feeling, and the magnet itself is very weak.I actually ended up clamping mine down, as shown in the picture. That said, the gooseneck is great--really top quality--and the light is extremely bright.

Strong amount of light for the money, love the neck
Had been looking around for a decent light for my lathe work. Some woodworking sites, they want upwards of $120 for 500 lumen gooseneck lamps, with the same basic construction. Had to be a better option. This is it save for one little quirk. (See below in my Cons.)Also understand one thing - this is a flood, not a spot. And the head is not pattern adjustable, the lens is made to flood out light, and is not able to put it in a spot pattern. For some woodworkers and others, if they want a spot this is not the light. I'm OK with the flood, it is powerful.Pros:Puts out an amazing amount of light for the little cob LED, and I don't think 500 lumens is a stretch. Might actually be more.Neck stays where you put it. Some of these, the neck is "springy", and tend to creep back to straight as you work. This baby stays put.I really like the switch on the head. I know where it is, I don't have to reach for it at the base, or worse, on the cord.Love the wavelength. Amplifies imperfections in my wood, and shows where I have more work to do on finishing, etc.Cons:Although the magnet seems to work fine, the magnet on/off switch seems to be a bit stiff. It wants to hang up in a couple of positions between on and off, although it will get there with a more firm turn either way. This is a mechanical movement inside the magnet. My Harbor Freight dial indicator magnet switch is smooth as butter. I might take off the light from the base and see if I can lubricate it a bit through the threaded hole.Thing is heavy. Although most of this is the magnet, a fair amount of the weight is in the neck, and in some awkward positions, I was able to make the magnet fail and release although it was fully engaged. A bit top heavy, but I can live with it.The transformer, (120VAC down to 15V), is the part you plug in, so even though you turn off the light, this transformer is still making 15 volts. I understand that you can leave most phone charger units plugged in forever and just use it when you need it, but some transformers don't like it and run warm. We'll see if this one holds up, since I don't want to have to plug and unplug it in all the time. I have not left it plugged in for an extended time so far.Lastly, the plug prongs are somewhat slim. I plugged it into two different receptacles, and it went in like butter, almost too loose. It worked, to be sure, but a slightly thicker set of prongs on this would have been appreciated, since I will be plugging it into a wall strip that I keep behind my lathe.Overall, with the pricing of some of these on woodworking sites through the roof, it is great for the money. One had basically this same lamp for over $120.This one is priced right. Nice lamp.

Big magnet needs big metal. Great task light!
Needing a task light, I took the plunge on this mag base flex light even with the negative magnet reviews. So far I'm glad I did and even performed a few common sense tests to check out the reported magnet issue. Below is what I found. What you need to know:(1) Big magnet needs big metal. If you stick this magnet to the side of a fridge, car door, or some other horizontal or vertical surface built with sheet metal, it will not hold its position well, if at all. If the mag base does seem to hold its position, when you try to adjust the flex light the mag base will move unless you hold it still while adjusting the light. This is simply due to the mechanics of a powerful magnet.(2) If you stick this mag base light to a drill press table, vise, anvil, lathe base, or any other surface built of thick steel or cast iron you likely won't be able to remove the magnet without first turning if "off". It holds very very well. Well enough that you can freely adjust the flex light without the mag base moving or coming off.

Great LED lamp with sturdy magnetic base
After having purchased similar lamps this one turned out to be the most sturdy. The COB has about 500 lm light output. Not a true spot light but illuminates a nice area with a more white/blue-isch color temperature. Great to see machined parts on the metal lathe. Magnetic base is very strong and stays put even on vertical surfaces, but lamp is easily relocated with easy to rotate on/off knob of the magnet.Gooseneck arm is fairly long and very sturdy and does not bend easily but stays in place after adjusting. Lamp does not vibrate much despite the long gooseneck arm when used on lathe or mill. On/off switch on top of the lamp is easily manipulated without noticeably moving the position. The wall power supply and lamp do NOT create electrical interference on the AM radio band like so many other lower cost LED lamps. A very sturdy lamp with great lighting that can take a beating in the machine shop. Highly recommended.

Magnetic strength is questionable.
The media could not be loaded. I ordered this to use on my wood lathe. I was hoping the magnetic strength was going to be stronger. I installed it above the work piece as shown in the photo. With the slightest wobble from uneven piece of wood, the light fell to the floor twice. The brightness of the light was ok, but not as bright as the smaller LED sewing machine lights that I purchased earlier.
