Anti climactic way to end the trilogy
Read this if you know the first two books very well. Maybe because it’s set in 2015, but the writing style to describe Maria vs. Lucia’s worlds felt too dissonant to keep me completely immersed in the story. The story doesn’t have recipes or much nuance and relies heavily on the reader’s knowledge of the first 2 books. Also it was kinda racist (purposefully?). It felt like there wasn’t enough time to fully develop each character or their arc. There was a lot of distraction trying to figure out timeline and family tree. It seemed like the metaphysical elements were a little superfluous at times. It feels like it got cut short and a huge amount of resolution had to happen in a very short amount of time. That said, there are some tearful moments , but it’s not a story to savor.

Big disappointment
I loved “Like Water for Chocolate “ and have read it twice over the years. The writing was lyrical. When I started to read this book, I was disappointed for two reasons: it was a retelling of the same story as “Like Water for Chocolate “ and the writing was so different that I couldn’t tell it was the same author.
