Decent, but old workstation.
This workstation was built in July 2013. I wanted something to act as a file server running linux and so the Windows 7 operating system was not an issue. Physically, the USB ports do not properly align with the casing, so it is rather difficult to attach USB devices to the rear ports (I have got some to be available, but may need to look at re-seating the motherboard if I need more). There are 3 USB ports on the front panel (2 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0) and 6 on the back (2 USB 3.0 and 4 USB 2.0). There is a NIC on the motherboard with a single RJ45 connector (i.e., standard wired connector). The motherboard has an inbuilt SAS controller, though is unusuable without the relevant propietary cabling, which seems unavailable/non-existent. The graphics card is a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 which has 1 DVI-I ouput and two DP outputs. This is an expensive graphics card for its day, but under linux is only supported by legacy drivers (340.xx). The nouveau driver is unable to deal with card and the appropriate NVIDIA legacy driver will only work with kernels up to 4.19 (released in 2018). This is based on using Debian Linux and needing the "Buster" release. Other distributions may be able to run a more modern kernel for this card. There are 10 SATA data ports and the power cable has 6 SATA power connectors. The machine came with no Wifi, Bluetooth, HDMI or VGA ports which were advertized. AI summarizes the BIOS's understanding of the machine (note that the number of ports recognized by the BIOS does not always correspond to the physical ports on the machine): Key System Information The report identifies the hardware as a Hewlett-Packard HP Z420 Workstation. The serial number is consistently found across the system board, chassis, and system information entries. The BIOS version is J61 v02.55, released on February 7, 2013, indicating that the system is more than a decade old. Processor Details The CPU is an Intel Xeon CPU E5-1620 running at a base clock speed of 3.60GHz. It has 4 physical cores and 8 threads (thanks to Intel's Hyper-Threading technology). The processor is in a LGA2011 socket. The report also details the processor's L1, L2, and L3 caches, with sizes of 256 kB, 1024 kB, and 10240 kB, respectively. Memory Information The system has a total of 256 GB of available memory capacity but is currently configured with 16 GB of installed RAM. It has two 8 GB DDR3 DIMMs manufactured by Micron, running at a configured speed of 1600 MT/s. The report specifies that the memory uses Multi-bit ECC (Error-Correcting Code), a feature common in workstations and servers that helps detect and correct data corruption. Ports and Expansion Slots The report provides a detailed inventory of the system's ports, including: PS/2 ports for a keyboard and mouse. Two RJ-45 ports for wired network connections. Serial ports and Firewire ports (IEEE 1394). Multiple Audio ports for both the rear and front panels. Numerous USB ports, including several USB 3.0 ports. SATA and SAS ports for connecting storage drives. It also lists the available expansion slots, including three PCI Express 3.0 slots (two x16 and one x8), a PCI Express 2.0 slot, and an older 32-bit PCI slot. The report notes that one of the x16 PCI Express 3.0 slots is "In Use", which is where your NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 graphics card is installed.
