RSL Creative Writing, Book 1: KS2, KS3, 11 Plus & 13 Plus - Workbook For Ages 9 Upwards

I love this book. I am a literacy tutor and I also home educate my children. This book is a valuable resource for all my students. It presents information clearly, has fantastic writing exercises as well as examples of how to improve your writing. More than anything, it makes writing fun and enjoyable which is something that is often neglected at school. Many of my school students complain that they hate learning English at school. I feel it is because it's more about passing exams than nurturing a true love of language.RSL Creative Writing teaches students how to approach writing, to use different language techniques and think about using words for effect, to produce descriptive images using the five senses, to expand vocabulary as well as tighten up their punctuation. It is an inspiring book and most importantly of all, it injects the fun back into writing!

Having used this publisher's products before, I know what to expect. A high quality resource which explains in detail how children can improve their writing. I love the fact that there are writing samples which are critiqued so children can see exactly what they should (and shouldn't) include. It's a great book for children and parents alike. Excellent for 11 plus preparation and all around creative writing practice. My only criticism is the fact that there are lots of blank pages which seem to have been added purely to increase the page count.

I’ve purchased book 1 and 2 of this series and am really impressed. I’ve bought several RSL products in the past and was a member of RSL Lifeline when my son sat his 11plus (this year). The quality and detail provided on ALL products is second to none. This writing guide allows students to work independently through each exercise. The guide is fun and aimed at the child rather than the tutor/parent. I can genuinely say that my son learnt more from these exercises than any other writing resource purchased over the years. His writing evidently improved after each task and his confidence soared.

We started preparing for 11+ exams mid February last year, so about 9-10 months before the actual exams. We bought all of RSL's 11+ books (maths, comprehension, creative writing) and did them at home. The methodology in the creative writing books is excellent, the improvement in my child's writing has been remarkable. With all the RSL books, the value is in the techniques taught in the solutions and explanations. Also recommend the youtube videos and the Lifeline subscription (closer to time). We are very pleased - our child has received offers from very very competitive schools, including all the top choices.

There isn’t a creative writing book as excellent as this book anywhere if I do say so myself! My DD is in a state school and as you will know, creative writing is not part of the curriculum sadly. So when we decided to give the 11 plus a go, we panicked as creative writing was new to her. Thanks to this book, my dd went from “ telling” in her stories to writing excellent descriptive pieces! It’s amazing how much she has improved since getting this. We have gone on to get both his maths and comprehension books.I have been the mum who went from panic as we were so new on the 11 plus journey to having absolute confidence in my dd as her writing didn’t just improve, but her language as well. You do not need a tutor for creative writing, this book is all you need. I will give ten stars if it were possible!!!

What a fantastic book, I’ve now also purchased no.2. I took the option not to tutor for 11 plus but that does make supporting with comprehension and creative writing quite difficult. I almost changed my mind until I came across these RSL resources.This book has been a tremendous help in help in elevating the quality of writing as well as common pitfalls. The child reviewing and marking other samples of work is particularly effective. I would highly recommend this and all the RSL books.

Very disappointed in this book. There are much better products out there to teach creative writing.

Wow, this has some powerful stuff inside! It covers things that i wouldn't even think of teaching myself! If my child takes onthe skills taught in here, i'm pretty sure the examiner would be impressed!What i will say though, its definitely a book for a parent and child to work on together.
