A Christian on the Mount: A Treatise Concerning Meditation

An Important And Blessed Duty
Why are there so few godly Christians?Thomas Watson believes it is because- "there are so few meditating christians." What kind of meditation does Watson have in view? Christian meditation -which he defines as- "the soul's retiring of itself ,so that,by a serious and solemn thinking upon God,the heart may be raised up to heavenly affections." He insists that meditation and study are not the same-study has as its goal an increase in knowledge, meditations desired result is an increase in godliness.Meditation helps to store and fix things in the heart and mind.It applies the truth, that has been heard or read and seals it to the inner man, thus having a profound effect upon the outward behavior and the inward disposition of the soul. The renowned Puritan Pastor gives numerous excellent suggestions on what to meditate upon.In the portionThe Subjects Of Meditation: We live in a day in which the level of sobriety which a godly man should exhibit is exceedingly rare.Certainly meditating on God's attributes(omniscience, holiness, wisdom, power, mercy, the love of Christ...)will fire our devotion, but to help produce a higher level of sobriety,we should also spend time reflecting on: 1.sin-its defiling nature, how deadly and powerful it is and the awful punishment it deserves(the eternal wrath of Almighty God).2.Death-Its certainty and its proximity, its finality(upon dying our eternal state is fixed forever).3.The day of judgement-"meditation on the day of judgement would make us to evaluate all our actions." Most men, except perhaps those whose hearts are so hardened and insensible, have some sense of their guilt, they therefore put thoughts of the day of judgement far from them(they have some hope that their guilt will be assuaged if they put away thoughts of that great and terrible day)but that is similar to one who avoids getting a medical issue diagnosed for fear of its severity. The Christian On The Mount is a rare work of Watson's(which was out of print for almost two centuries)and for those who are familiar with his written ministry, there should be a measure of rejoicing. It is presently available through kindle and in print(published by Northampton Press and Bottom Of The Hill Publishing).Christian meditation has not been something that has been a common subject in the pulpit or in print. For Biblical soundness and warmth of communication -Watson's ability to effectively ,clearly and powerfully set forth this Biblical teaching would be difficult to surpass.

Thoughtful, penetrating, helpful book
Thomas Watson is one of the most readable and edifying of the Puritan writers. Always Christ-centered, grace-exalting, and biblically-practical, Watson aims to glorify the Lord and edify His people. This is a wonderful, thoughtful, and penetrating work; and I highly recommend it to any thoughtful Christian. Watson makes clear that in his day--and obviously in ours--very few professing Christians get alone, meditate upon the truths of Scripture, and thus grow in Christian maturity. Watson not only explains what meditation is and how to do it, he gives fifteen chapters of things on which to meditate--each is sobering, provocative, precious, and transforming. Any regenerate soul who actually does this, deeply meditating on these fifteen biblical subjects, cannot help but grow in his or her love for Christ and in maturity. Study this book as soon as you can.

Excellent book on meditation
Even though this book was written in the 1600s, the language is easier to understand than that of the King James Version of the Bible. It is fairly clear and direct, and there is very little awkward syntax. The content is excellent. The introduction differentiates between modern Christian meditation, such as that taught by John Mains, and Christian meditation as practiced from the old testament on up into the new. He distinguishes between true meditation and what we call meditation now, which is really contemplative prayer. He also gives practical tips on how and when to meditate and suggests 15 topics for meditation. It is a very practical book. Great to combine this form of meditation along with contemplative prayer, Bible reading, and Bible study to really grow in your ability to apply God's word to your life.

A necessary read for a Christian desiring to practice biblical meditation
Thomas Watson writes clearly and succinctly concerning the necessity of mediation. He agrees that a Christian can’t truly grow without rightly meditating on the Word of God. But he finished with meditation must lead to obedience or else it is useless. I can’t recommend this book enough!
