Tough, Cheap, and Perfect for a Workhorse Bike
I use the SHIMANO Square Type Bottom Bracket (BSA 68MM, Spindle 122.5MM) on my daily work bike — the kind that gets locked up outside in all weather, 365 days a year. Rain, snow, sun — you name it, this bike sees it, and this bottom bracket has proven to be the perfect match for that kind of abuse. It’s not fancy, but that’s exactly what I want. It’s sealed, so it keeps the worst of the elements out, and when it finally starts to feel knotchy or grindy after a couple of years (which is totally fair given the conditions), it’s cheap and easy to swap out. For the price, I don’t mind replacing it every two years — it beats spending time and money trying to overhaul something more expensive that’s going to get trashed by weather anyway. The 122.5mm spindle gives good chainline spacing for my setup, and the install is straightforward with a basic bottom bracket tool. Once it’s in, I don’t think about it again for a long time — exactly how a commuter part should be. If you’ve got a beater or work bike living outside like mine, this bottom bracket is a no-brainer: reliable, low-maintenance, and cost-effective to replace when the time comes.

Works great and fits perfect.
Had a poor quality bottom bracket that started creaking after a couple of years. This Shimano unit was a direct fit and works great so far.

A cost effective and easily noticeable upgrade
Replaced a vintage cup & cone style bottom bracket that was pitted and had corrosion. The replacement was pretty quick and straight forward after noting a few measurements and purchasing the correct sized bottom bracket. You do need access to a few basic bike specific tools in order to remove the old crankset and bottom bracket as well as to install this new one. My cranks now spin smoother than ever.

Possible premature wear cause
I installed the sealed bracket and it failed after three months and 1000 miles. I wanted to know why such a premature failure so I disassembled the unit pictured. Traces of some possible grease in the right crank side bearing and none in the left side bearing.
