The Fat You Eat is the Fat You Wear
Read the book, it sounds so logical. Till I realized that meat, chicken, fats .. are not good for you. It isn't just fat. It is everything that meat, poultry, etc does to your body. When I took the time to read another 20 books on these subjects .. buying meat or chicken that is grass fed (in America, good luck finding that) and no hormones .. I did find one meat that was $25/pound. Nobody can afford that.I realized that the book gave me permission to eat just as I already eat - good choices for bad stuff to put into my body. But only calorie restriction will get weight off. I am no fan of calorie restriction.Fat is fat - whether it is 'good' or 'bad.' Gotta keep that in mind. Being fat, overweight, obese .. fats play havoc with your body's hormones. Obesity does too. There has to be a better way cuz it sure ain't this way of eating fats 'in moderation.' I don't know hardly anybody that did the 'moderation' thing and stayed trim & healthy.

This is working!!!
The information was somewhat confusing at first however I did grasp the program finally. Following this gave me much more food than I normally eat so I was concerned I would gain weight. I have always eaten very healthy anyway and followed many of their suggestions, for example: pastured eggs, grass fed beef, olive and coconut oils. The one thing I wasn't doing was getting enough fiber which seemed to make a difference because I lost 2.4 pounds the first week! Now I only wanted to lose 5 pounds so this was great! I maintained my normal exercise routine of walking 2 miles daily and light weights twice weekly. Overall I feel better and today starts my second week. It is difficult for me to get in the 30 grams of fiber and 82 grams of protein so I did purchase Dr. Perlmutters prebiotic fiber and Bluebonnet whey protein to help me meet those requirements. So far I feel good and will stick with it!

My good cholesterol was up and my bad cholesterol was down
I can't say enough about this book. Following the recommendations in this book, I dropped my cholesterol by 50 points within a few months. My good cholesterol was up and my bad cholesterol was down. My doctor, who recommended the book to me, was amazed and elated. If you want solid advice on how to eat a heart healthy diet, try this book. It isn't a fad diet which makes you lose all kinds of weight quickly. It's simply great advice for systemic health.

Recommended by our doctor
I am delighted to have this book. Nothing in it was new to me, but it lays everything out concisely with clear explanations. I was looking for a book to recommend to my patients, and discovered this when it was recommended by my personal physician. We are confident that following this protocol will profoundly impact metabolic syndrome, with lower blood sugar numbers and better cardiac outcomes.

Simple big idea worth exploring
Smart Fat was my inspiration to start this journey exploring good fat, bad fat. My previous thinking was that ALL fat was BAD and you should avoid it and since I watched my cholesterol fairly carefully everything I consumed was low fat or no fat. Of course that then triggered me consuming lots of carbohydrates - heck why should a potato be bad for you. It all comes down the education and understanding modern thinking in foods and food categories. This book was definitely an aha moment for me on my journey. Since I wasn’t seeking to lose weight but rather find a way to remove sugars and carbs yet feel fulfilled and NOT starving all day. The ideas in this book are so simple to understand and because of that set you in a new way of eating lifestyle. The big idea here is the 5-5-10 approach (see attached image). That is 5 servings of Good Fat, 5 servings of Protein and 10 servings of Fiber. At first I was mystified what a serving was but the authors give you simple analogies like a pack of cards etc. Secondly I wanted to verify that data and the facts and I Found similar nutritional data on a few government sites so I felt confident the information was accurate. My third challenge was remembering what I ate and which category - further what was the shortfall and what foods should I look for to get to the targets. I must have tried every app in the market and could not find one - so since I decided to write one myself - you can read about it at goodfatap.com - I think the key take aways are the total lack of fiber in our daily modern diets. You really need to make a huge effort to find fibers; ten servings is a lot and really hard to get to that number. Although the authors say that it's not imperative you get to exactly 10. However the good news is once you start stretching you will feel so much better. You don’t feel hungry. Your weight drops to a new equilibrium, you don't have sugar cravings, you get your energy back. This is a wonderful book and provides a good education and kick start into a new lifestyle. I am shortly going for my annual physical and hopefully my numbers will be positive. about my experiences on the goodfatapp.com blog pages. Read more

Some are very bad. Dr
Dr. Masley's work for me added real value to the work of Dr Fuhrman, mentioned in my review of two of his books, and Dr. M goes further.Yes, fats are essential for the brain. As Dr. Amen says, their is so much fat in our brains, and it is so necessary, that being called a fat-head is actually a compliment. And Yes, we can get all the fats we need from the plant based G-BOMBS that Dr. Fuhrman recommends (Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries and Seeds and the like). We can use animal fats, but be careful, not all animal fats are equal. Some are very bad.Dr. Masley, as a Cardiologist, recommends three tests that are essential to helping us understand how we are doing and if we need to take serious interventions to prevent a heart attack or other lifestyle disease. You need to consider getting these tests or using the substitutes Dr. Masley provides that we can use that he has shown via his research can validly guide us. I consider Dr. Masley's research on this a breakthrough.

Books like these should be a compulsory read
Books like these should be a compulsory read !!! They open your eyes to how much rubbish there is on our supermarket shelves and how much money food manufacturing giants are making out of our ignorance (all to the detriment of our health). I suppose it could be worse though, at least we've got GPs with our best interests at heart ready to give us sound nutritional advice rather than just hand out pills !!! I wonder if anyone's making any money out of that too??Signed,a mid-life cynic (or realist, depending on what side you're on).

An easy to read book, mostly for people who are new to this concept of eating fats
The language is easy and funny. But if you want to dig deeper into the science, you shouldn't expect much from this book.A big plus is that it gives you a 30 days meal plan, including the recipes.

A life changing book!
I love this book! While much of the information is surprising ( forget the Health Canada and US food pyramids) it is well backed up by lots of current research. Reading it does much to explain the current obesity and type 2 diabetes crises in North America and how to avoid both outcomes. Personally, having just helped my stepmom move into an assisted living home as her Alzheimer's worsens, l realize that if I want a different outcome as I age - something has got to change. Enter Smart Fat - which does not offer a diet in the traditional sense of the word - but rather a new way of eating. The first half outlines the current thinking on how our diet reacts with our biology (not a pretty picture if you, like me, have a "typical" north American diet) - the second half covers what to eat with simple, tasty recipes. Following this plan will not break the bank - although in my geographic area grass fed meat is hard to find and mostly out of my price range, but the same could have been said about organic produce a decade ago - so hopefully those prices will drop as demand increases.I have been following the plan for three weeks now and have lost 7 lbs, a couple of inches of belly fat and feel great!Highly recommended
