What is the purpose of the base station if recording is done via the cloud & subscription service, looking for system that didn’t need subscript?

The base station (if it supports your model camera(s)/doorbell(s)) allows you to record to local storage instead of the cloud service and provides a wireless connection point to do so instead of using your home WI-FI. It also handles connectivity to the internet for your camera(s)/doorbell(s)). So basically keeps your recordings private to you. HOWEVER, I personally haven’t seen any information on whether it supports the full range of additional features you get “activated” with the cloud subscription. Thinking the sparse nature of that information would be because it doesn’t/won’t. After all, they want your subscription dollars. It’s also why this thing is so pricey.
