Silver Wings (Choose Your Own Adventure)

Great book for young read e re who love adventure.

[Note that this review is for the first edition which doesn't have the printing mistakes mentioned in other reviews. I have no idea if those problems were fixed.]You'll be 13 pages in before your first choice, but overall its quite a fun little story. This is the tale of two gliders who hit mechanical trouble while flying over Mexico. When one glider goes down, it is up to the reader (the pilot of the second glider) as to the next course of action to follow. Each path can lead to lengthy glider sequences, or encounters on the ground. Overall its actually a good read from Montgomery, and even avoids his usual extraterrestrial encounter pitfall that he commonly put into his older books. Note that this is one of the later CYOA adventure books, so the variation of paths isn't great, but there's enough for a fun night's read.

Yes, I understand that it does not go page 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. That was part of the fun. If you follow the original page directions, this one has you planning your trip, then crashing (no leaving the airport, and no flight), then somehow you are in the air flying again & worrying about your friends, and then you are in a 4x4 (without landing or getting into the 4x4) with a friend that you thought was possibly hurt on the previous page & looking for your copilot who had been with you the page before and suddenly is gone. With NO between plot. C'mon CYOA people, where's the proofreading? This book has the page numbers all wrong. For example, page 4 says "turn to page 58." Well, I'm pretty sure it should be "8" and I've been trying to figure it all out & correct the numbers, but I guess I'll give up and try another one.I'm not sure if I have a special copy, but I checked this out from the library because I loved this series as a kid and I thought my boys would enjoy it too. If I had bought this I would have been really upset. It is the paperback version, from Chooseco publishing with revised text in 2006. The book felt brand new in 6/2008.Big disappointment, please don't waste your money. Try another CYOA book, but you may want to give it a test run at your local library first.

As another reviewer commented, all of the choices have the wrong page numbers, directing you to the wrong sequences of events. The producer of this series acknowledges the misprint and has recalled the book. If you have already purchased the book, there is an option to exchange the book for another Choose Your Own Adventure of your choice. See [...] for more information. There is no word on whether this title will be reprinted with the necessary corrections. I don't know why Amazon continues to sell this as it is essentially defective.
