It’s super sharp, sturdy and easy to use
recently purchased the Slicer, and I must say, it has quickly become an essential tool in my kitchen. This mandoline is both decent and sturdy, making it a reliable choice for anyone looking to elevate their food prep game.### Design and BuildThe first thing I noticed was the robust construction. The materials feel durable and well-made, which gives me confidence that this tool will last for years. The non-slip handle and feet provide stability while slicing, ensuring that I can work quickly without worrying about accidents.### PerformanceOne of the standout features of this mandoline is its exceptionally sharp blades. It effortlessly slices through vegetables, fruits, and even cheese with ease. Whether I'm making thin cucumber slices for a salad or julienning carrots for a stir-fry, this tool delivers consistent results every time.### Safety FeaturesWhile the sharpness is a significant advantage, it also comes with a word of caution. I found myself needing to be extra careful while handling the mandoline, especially during the initial uses. The included food holder is a great addition, providing a safer way to grip smaller items while slicing. However, it’s essential to keep your fingers clear of the blade to avoid any mishaps.### Ease of Use and Cleaning the Slicer is relatively easy to use, with adjustable thickness settings that allow for customization based on the recipe. Cleaning is also straightforward; the blades are detachable, making it easy to rinse under running water.

Well-made mandolin, excellent quality
While I hate to buy any product manufactured in the People's Republic of China -- especially when a comparable quality product is available -- I must admit that this Vekaya mandolin is well made and sturdy. It is mostly made of stainless steel, including the blade(s), stand, and the product slide surfaces, with black plastic accents and corners. I am a full-time craft cocktail bartender, and I have used it to cut various cocktail garnishes (cucumber, citrus wheels, etc.) five to seven days per week for each of the last 13 months, as well as using it to slice vegetables at home. It has been machine-washed in a commercial dishwasher (3-minute cycle) each time it has been used at work (300+ washes), and the blade is still sharp enough to cut citrus, cucumbers, radishes, carrots, onions and other salad vegetables with minimal effort. The blade is permanently fixed, but it is mounted on a pivoting portion of the stainless product slide surface to enable the blade to be sharpened. (Note that the blades of most inexpensive mandolins are permanently fixed in such a way to impede any attempt at sharpening.) After 13 months of daily use, I am only now contemplating having it professionally re-sharpened together with several of my Wusthof knives. When I purchased this mandolin a year ago (May 2023), I looked extensively online, thoroughly searching both Amazon and other services using Google, and I am still convinced this is one of the best available mandolins or other manual slicers -- and it is head-and-shoulders better than any of the typical cheap, mostly plastic mandolins used by the restaurants in which I have worked over the years. The package I bought included a black plastic safety slider to grip food products while slicing them, as well as two heavy-duty safety gloves. Having used numerous other available mandolins of lesser quality, I strongly endorse this mandolin by Vekaya.

Sturdy, efficient, and well-designed
We do humanitarian mission work in the jungles of Central America, often cooking for large groups in challenging conditions. Over the years, we’ve used many different mandolines, but this one is by far the best! It’s incredibly easy to use, making food prep much faster, which is a huge help when cooking in remote areas. But what really sets it apart is how easy it is to clean—an essential feature when you don’t have the convenience of a full kitchen. Sturdy, efficient, and well-designed, this mandoline has become a must-have in our camp kitchen. Highly recommend it for anyone who needs a reliable and hassle-free slicer!

Dangerous and Difficult to Use
I’m an experienced cook and have a very complete and well-used suite of quality knives and tools, but a mandoline was not among them prior to purchasing the one currently under review. So I tried it out several times, and each time I managed to cut myself, either during the operation of the slicer or while cleaning it in the sink. I always handle sharp tools with great caution, so the fact that I could not handle the mandoline without injury, or had to wear special gloves to use it (or clean it!) should (and did) come as a big wake-up call.Even if safety were not a concern, I found the mandoline to be an inefficient way to slice or julienne food items (I tried it with potatoes and carrots). You have to cut the food items into small pieces in order for them to fit in the “gripper,” and they tend to slide out. You have to lean on the food to keep it engaged with the blades (“leaning” on it occasioned one of the injuries I received to my thumb when the potato slid out from the gripper despite my efforts). The result was a significant amount of food waste compared to the precisely-cut vegetables. Unlike a quality chef’s knife, there is also no recommended way to sharpen the mandoline. I didn’t use mine long enough for it to become dull, but the inevitably dull blade would only enhance the safety issues. The risk of sharp blades in soapy water during cleaning tempts one to avoid cleaning it thoroughly, which presents yet other hazards.I don’t recommend this gadget for use by ANYONE. I do recommend purchasing some quality knives, learning how to use, care for and store them properly, and patiently taking the time to slice food properly!
