BLACK BEAUTY (S. nigra 'Gerda ppaf) NEW from England! Intense Purple-Black foliage provides season long interest and color! The unique, massive 10", pink flowers cover the plant in midsummer and emit a light lemon fragrance. A first for Sambucus! Dark purple berries in late summer attract songbirds and can be use to make wine. Use it as a shrub, as a bold perennial or train it into a small tree. It's colorful, versatile and easy to grow. It s finally here - the plant sensation of Europe is available in America. Black Beauty is a breakthrough plant with intriguing dark black foliage. Not only does this plant make Guincho Purple extinct, but it totally changes your perception of Sambucus. The leaf color does not fade to green in summer, but actually gets darker. Loads of lemon scented, rich pink flowers in late June early July that contrast wonderfully with the foliage. Grow it as a shrub, or cut it back each year and use it as a bold perennial. Tons of impulse appeal! Developed by Ken Tobutt and Jacqui Prevette of the HRI - East Malling Research Station in England.

they do not look like the picture
After two years, they do not look like the picture. The leaves are more green than this. Way more green. I really wanted the dark leaves shown in the phot.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OE0VL0/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_67

Disappointed, mislead
This was supposed to be in a 4" pot -instead, it was in a 3" square pot and less than 6" tall. I complained to the seller. The seller said the pot is measured "on the diagonal". What?! That is not the way pots are sold, I checked greenhouse suppliers to be sure. It was also barely tinted, mostly green as well. So, for 18.00 or so, I got a tiny plant that may not be an actual Black Beauty clone. Definitely not worth it, and I would not buy from Hirts again.

Hardy travelers!
The packaging was horrid, but the not-dormant well-leafed plants are springing back from the ordeal of shipping. They needed some pampering in cloches but are now going gangbusters in my greenhouse. With the exceptionally high demand for Sambucus Nigra in the world, I’m glad to add more to the landscape and begin harvesting berries for both medicinal and culinary uses.

Micro plant!
This is the second time I’ve ordered (and paid) for this product, and the second time it has died in short order. There are lush, healthy plants all around where these were placed, so moisture, fertility, sun exposure are optimal, so I am chalking it up to the idea that this variety is too small to ship and plant and grow successfully. They were planted next to a black lace elderberry, so I know the plants needs are met, so what else could it be?

Kind of beat up in the shipping process, but recovered eventually.
Very small plants that arrived battered and bruised. It took a few weeks and they did recover. I purchased them as pollinators for Black Lace Elderberrys so really won't know until next year or beyond the quality of the plants. I could not find any locally and it is nice to have another resource to locate them.

A Nice Large And Healthy Elderberry Bush!
I received my Black Beauty elderberry bush today, it's over a foot tall and probably as wide- I was pleasantly surprised. I've read comments of people getting a small plant this is a super nice size! I hope the Black Lace elderberry I ordered is this large. The plant is super healthy looking too. I will be ordering more from this company.UPDATE: These are tough plants. I planted this one and the Black Lace elderberry last fall and they made it through the harsh winter here in Ohio. My Black Beauty is already starting a thicket. I've never seen elderberry bushes for sale in nurseries, I was happy to find them here.
