BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Alligator Lopper Cordless Chainsaw, Tool Only (LLP120B)

I bought a gas powered chipper and to feed a lot of the larger limbs, they have to be straight, so it pays to prepare the pile before starting. The "Alligator" took a lot of the work out of that job. Not much of a time saver on the really small stuff, but in the 1 to 3 inch range, this thing really eats them up. Works best if you let the tool do the work, but I pretty much abused it by pressing the cut and cutting through knots and such. I hate hand oiling, so I have a little oil tray that I dip the tool in and press the trigger. Makes a mess, but it oils the chain in about 2 seconds and off I go for more. I have several 20-volt tools, so I have plenty of batteries and always bring 2 charged batteries with me when I start a project. Used it all day and never had to go to another battery. I think the key to using these batteries is to charge them as soon as you are done for the day. Don't let them sit around uncharged. Yes, I hit the reported problem of the tool stopping early because I didn't maintain pressure on the power button. Mainly a case of me getting lazy. Happens to me with electric chain saws as well. They could fix this by not requiring you to depress the button all the way to the handle to run. I never had it jam on any limbs. I could force it to stop, but relieving the pressure would have it running again. Its not as light as hand pruners, but its lots lighter than it looks. I use it when splitting wood as well to cut off the stray limbs I find on the wood I'm spitting. Looks a little unusual, but its a tool I now rely any time I work with trees, bushes and brush. Update: It is 2022 and I've been beating this tool up since 2013. I have downed limbs all the time and have used this on logs well beyond its rated capacity of 4". The bottom guard got caught in the chain from me twisting it but besides the chunk out of the guard, it still works like a champ. Batteries last a long time too. Great tool.

This is a great little tool that will surprise you. I needed a saw that would work for the smaller branches, trees and privet bushes that all bounced back with my larger chain saw. I was tired of hand cutting and needed either a gas or electric option that wasn’t super heavy. I’m a small woman and needed something I could easily handle. It has a low vibration and super rare kickback, even when cutting larger branches. The weight is good- it’s not super light but certainly isn’t heavy. The jaws of this saw will allow you to clamp and cut smaller branches and trees and even prune bushes and crepe myrtles. It was excellent with Camellias. It doesn’t bog down like I thought it would and is fairly easy to keep clean of debris. The safety on it is good and it won’t accidentally start. There are two safety buttons- one on each handle on the grips. Both safety buttons must be pressed for it to run- but they are in easy access locations on your natural grip of the handles, so it’s not awkward. I haven’t found a comparable tool out there at any price. I bought 2 off-brand batteries and a charger off Amazon, too. Typically, I only need one battery unless it’s a really big job. We have a lot of Black & Decker tools but this one is probably my new favorite. What a neat idea! This works so much better for chopping up small brush piles and trimming around the house. With my gas saw you can't really chop up medium and small branches because they are too light, the chain grabs them and pulls them into you and binds things up. These things with the jaws work on small stuff just great, but it also steps up to the plate to cut 3-4" stuff too. You won't want to try to run this with the itty bitty 1.5 ah batteries, hopefully you have at least one of the 3 AH ones or 4 AH+. We have some off-brand batteries that claim to be 5 AH+ and they really have some oompf behind them and run this tool well. The oiling system is a bit... whatever. If you have a classic finger pump oil can you can load up with bar oil that works pretty good for forcing oil into the oil hole, and then it runs out and kinda drips everywhere... we just have a 5 gallon bucket we keep this in (jaws down) and thats how we keep from making too much oil mess or getting oil on the handles. I also loosen and pull the chain out and pump oil along the bar manually every so often just to be super safe, since a lot of people have reported issues that seem to stem from inadequate oiling. A bit messy but still much less headache than the gas saw. My wife and I are both very happy with this tool and I'm thrilled she likes using it because its very safe compared to even an electric chainsaw (you'd have to REALLY mess up to cut yourself with this) and we get a lot more done with her limbing and chopping down branches while I buck up the trunk of a tree with the gas saw.

I have other B&D 20V yard tools that are great and this uses the same batteries. I have a small Husqy gas chain saw and the B&D 20V pole saw (another super B&D tool!) for tree work. I bought the Alligator for limbing and also hoped it would be able to munch through into light brush piles reducing thin branches several at a time for easier disposal instead needing to cut them with a lopper one at a time. When I first got it, I almost returned it, but I'm happy I kept it. After getting used to it, I've really come to appreciate its utility and safety. PROs: It cuts 2-3" limbs effortlessly. The 20V battery has lots of power and will cut just about all the wood and brush that I care to clean up in one session. The chain holds it's tension well and doesn't need tightening very often. Very safe to use because the chain is covered and there's a safety switch on both handles. CONs: Need to keep steady pressure on both safety switch pads or it stops. It's a bit awkward to use until you get used to it. Tends to pull soft or green small branches into the chain gear and jam. Battery snap-in latch mechanism is too tight; it often takes two hands just to release the battery latch and to lock the fresh battery in place. The plastic oil bottle provided is a messy waste of time. Get an old-fashioned metal oiler. There should be a better way to verify that adequate oil is aboard. Directions say to re-oil after 10 minutes of cutting, but with cuts taking just a few seconds each, 10 minutes of cutting is not easy to estimate.

Really useful on all sorts of garden and home improvement jobs. Very easy and effective for cutting and smaller trees and branches. Cuts like a scissor and therefore supports branch while cutting, unlike chain saw. Very easy to use. Very safe — chain is not exposed and no worry about kick back. Highly recommended.

We have a small ranch and multiple rental properties with many trees to prune and this B & D Alligator has made our life much easier. No fuel to mess with, no cranking, no noise, no smelly exhaust, no burns from exhaust, just clean simple pruning of limbs up to 4". Battery lasts forever. Naysayers who report chain problems, bar problems, oiler problems, etc, may have received lemons, but we honestly believe they simply do not clean the tool well or keep it oiled properly. A few "Q tips" and a simple old styled pump oiler make cleaning the oiler fill area a snap and the oiler makes it easier to fill rapidly rather than using the little filler bottle included with the saw. Run the saw a bit while shaking it upside down periodically to clear build up of trash in the throat of the saw and and avoid twisting or jerking the saw if a limb binds and you shouldn't have any chain or bar problems if the chain is maintained tight and well lubed. We are still on the first bar and chain after 6 months of relatively heavy use. Sharpen it occasionally and keep it tight. The self tightener works okay if the throat is cleaned prior to loosening the bar holding bolts slightly and then gently pulling the bar outward until the chain is tight. Tighten it up and you are back in business. Our saw has paid for itself many times over in the last 6 months and we have no reason to believe it is not going to last for years, most likely with the same bar and maybe and new chain if the original wears down to where it cannot be sharpened. Good luck and don't be frightened by the naysayers, who either for bad luck received a lemon or unfortunately do not have the patience or ability to manage the tool correctly. We would give it 10 stars if possible. We also have the weed eater and hedge trimmer for this B&D system with interchangeable batteries. The weed eater is also a winner, but haven't used the hedge trimmer enough to comment.

Ok, so Black and Decker isn't exactly top shelf for power tools, and these are no different. However, if you maintain trails, or really anything with a lot of vines or smaller stuff these are amazing. We had a bunch of stuff come down on the trails from a recent tornado. It's nearly impossible to safely cut through a bunch of branches with a chainsaw without it jumping around. Even more so if things are at a odd angle. These guys make stuff like that a breeze. You just reach in and start snipping til you can get to the trunk and use the chainsaw. It's also the only thing that'll cut big hanging vines. It probably saved me 3 hours of work in the first week. note: That little thing for putting oil in it is garbage and will leak.

I purchased this cordless chain saw to cut branches on my trees and creeping fig vines that are too big for loppers, and it works great! I am a female in my late 60's, and it is not too heavy to operate for me. I read the reviews before purchasing, and saw the comments about adding oil being a nuisance; but I just used a little canola oil that I had in the kitchen, and it works great. The little plastic bottle has a little screw cap that opens the top to dispense oil, then screws back down to close when finished adding oil to the little reservoir. I would definitely recommend this tool because it is easy to use, has great safety features, and the cost was very reasonable. If I had not stumbled on this saw, I would have spent much more on a chain saw that would probably have been too heavy and dangerous for me to use.

July 29 2019 UPDATE TO MY REVIEW: Within the first month of using this, the chain guide bar has come apart. I am searching for a replacement part, but a major parts warehouse has just told me that the part is out of stock and DISCONTINUED. DO NOT BUY. So far, I’ve only had a chance to test it out for about 30 mins, but at this point I LOVE it. I am easily able to clear my overgrown plum trees and hack down carragana bushes and poplar saplings. Not having to pull start is FANTASTIC. The battery is small and not heavy, and thus far, I run out of energy before the battery does. One note...the best price I could find was on Amazon, purchasing the bare tool, plus charger. They offer the two pack batteries, but for some reason, they would not sell them to me. A “solution” sprung up on the page, telling me that I needed to order larger quantity. Instead, I ordered them from Home Depot... cost more, but was able to buy just the two that I wanted. Don’t know how long the item may last, but if I get all the way through my 30 feet of tangled, barbed, overgrown plums, I’ll consider it worth the money and will not hesitate to buy another one for my next project. I could not find one of these for sale in any store hereabouts, and no one I’ve talked to has ever heard of it. If people knew these things would be flying off the shelves ( and probably coming down in price).

Es un modelo que no le encuentro sentido. Pense que sujetaba bien a las ramas y al tener sujeción cortaba más rápidamente, pero no es así. Demasiado rara y complicada. Lo siento pero tuve que regresarla y buscar una mejor. Si le encuentras uso a abrir unas tijeras para cortar ramas.. adelante!

This tool is perfect for cutting smaller branches and a lot safer to use than a regular chainsaw. Actually, it's quicker as you can grab a branch on one side to scoop the branch into the jaws and with a quick squeeze, the limb is cut. I only gave the battery a lower rating as I bought it tool only and I would suggest if buying tool only you buy the fast charger and the highest AH battery you are willing to pay for. A 1.5ah battery is good for about 20 minutes so if you buy a larger battery capacity(2ah or more) it would be better, but that goes for any battery operated tool.

This saw is ideal for trimming branches as lt is much lighter than a regular chain saw and can be used in more confined spaces. Also, with a battery you do not need to be limited by the length of the extension cord
