Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (Dover Thrift Editions: Classic Novels)

The more things change, the more they stay the same
This tale, with but a few minor changes(meth/oxy for alcohol, blue collar Midwestener/Southerner/displaced mine/auto/timber/factory worker for Irish immigrant) still can be read firsthand in small towns everywhere in America. There was a brief shining moment thru the fifties that seemed like America was going to grow and fullfill her destiny as the equal and free land of contented connected society for all, but it was snatched out of our dreams. Consumption replaced contentment , massive crushing profit margins replaced morality, freedom, worth, and honor. Stephen believed so strongly that knowledge=enlightenment he paid from his own pocket to publish what he had seen in the slums of his city, and it was a match in the darkness for a minute.

A Dark Story about an Intriguing Girl
I enjoyed this book very much, but only read the Maggie part of the story for my English class. If I do end up reading the rest of the book and like it, I would definitely give it five stars! What I did read, I love. It does have a dark, tragic feel to the story, and you really feel sorry for the main character, Maggie. I believe it is true to its genre of realism, but focuses more on the psychological aspect of Maggie and the naturalism branch (meaning how the environment affects her). You can really feel sympathy towards Maggie and her character, so if you're into getting into the personal life of Maggie with a dark aspect, you'll enjoy Crane's novel!

Depressing
Well written but incredibly sad story and characters. An honest depiction of the harshness of street life though and the hopelessness therein.

Interesting
Had to read this for a college class. It was interesting about a girl that grew up in a kind of abusive household.

Sad but true
This book is a very fast read. it's a small book and also one that is hard to put down. It tells a story that is historical 19th century American(New York). A typical slum(immigrant) family. It's Brutal, shocking and sad. One you will think about for a long while after you read it.

A good read dark and gloomy
A good read very dark it can be hard going, but considering the year it was writen it is what it is. I would have given six stars, but I think it's not for every one. That's my opinion but worth a read.

Great facsimile of the original 1896 edition
What more can be said: you have here the book as it was published in 1896. True, the first chapter pages are sometimes placed too high up on the page, but hey, that's nothing compared to the pleasure of reading that great book. No footnotes to impede your reading experience, no typo mistakes (I checked this printed version against the one that can be found as a pdf file at Openlibrary and they are identical)... Highly recommended, and I have NOT been paid by the editor to publish this comment.Greeting from France :-)

Bon produit
Rapport qualité très bon. Il ne contient cependant pas de notes ou d'introduction sur le roman. A part ce detail tout est très bien

're: very disappointing
I appreciate the book was meant to question passing judgement but that could have been done in good English no need for incomprehensible slang. Often felt unrealistic which defeats the object
