SPOILER ALERT! This is the story of a lone dog named Lucky, who was trapped in an abandoned city after a horrible earthquake. Along the way, he meets a strange pack of dogs. The timid group saves him by fighting off blood thirsty foxes that had cornered him and his meat. He begins to form a bond with the pack and to his surprise he discovers his litter sister. When the city gets shaken by aftershocks, Lucky finally convinces his friends they need to move on. How can they live when his partners don't know how to hunt? Can they survive in the wild in conditions like these? Lucky’s pack walked through the woods seemingly for miles without end until they lose sight of the city. They find the perfect place to rest and the next day he starts teaching them how to hunt. Checking out the surrounding area, they see a house, with an automatic feeder, that periodically dumps dog food into bowls. Lucky senses there is something wrong happening. His friends just waltz right toward the food and find themselves captured by bloodhounds. The hounds don't smell Lucky yet, so he has a chance to get close. His frightened friends are put in a small room, how will he get them out? Lucky considers his options while having to keep a low profile so the bloodhounds do not smell him. Finally, he comes up with a bright idea. He exposes himself and leads them away going through the hidden hole in the fence, then goes back to where his friends are. He brings them back to camp and decides that they need to leave. As the pack travels quickly, he wonders when he will ever be able to leave his partners and be a lone dog once again. As they are walking, he finds a place that is perfect for them. There is plenty of shelter, water, and game in the valley. Plus this valley is hidden so well by the surrounding ridge line that you can’t see it until you are right on top of it. He leaves his friends there feeling regret but also feeling happy that he can be free again. Far off he hears the howls and barks of a dog fight, his pack was in trouble. They had all faced many dangers together but they always prevailed. They traveled so long and so hard, was it all for nothing? All Lucky ever wanted to do was be a lone dog free of responsibilities but he bonded with them. He would not back down, he had to save them. After all the dangers they've been through together will it all end here?TO BE CONTINUED…

Good
Book was good but I have some issues. It keeps talking about how Lucky is a lone dog but never shows him as one. He always feels sad when a dog leaves him. The dogs are dumbed down, often Thinking in one word. For exapmle: "Blood! Thought lucky. Death..." ANd, Gillian Philip wrote this, not Kate Cary or Cherith Baldry. I don't really like her writing style. It's kinda annoying like Tui T Sutherland's.

very interesting
The detail is divine and intriguing, and the plot overall is unique, I find that the perspective of lucky is very interesting, and helps to keep the reader engaged, as well as the plot twist.

Boring, lame, and just overall disappointing
I have read Erin Hunter's Warrior's series so I found myself curious about this one so I decided to give it a try. And boy, did I find myself disappointed. I'll do my best not to compare it to Warriors (even though I found Warriors to go downhill after the first series) since this is its own works and, correct me if I'm wrong, despite it being under the Erin Hunter name, I read it isn't even the original people who started the name of Erin Hunter. Which does show since the writing style is different, but that isn't the issue. It starts right off the bat with the disaster and Lucky trying to survive afterwards without establishing who he is as a character. I mean, they sure do love to go on and on about how he's a Lone Dog WITHOUT EVER SHOWING HIM AS A LONE DOG. Dear god, that ANNOYED me so much. I thought one of the basic rules of writing was show not tell? How am I suppose to believe he's a lone dog when from the beginning he is with another dog? And when they leave he feels lonely? Then wants to team up with Old Hunter? Then decides to stick with the Leashed Dogs, clearly grows attached to them, then feels upset when he tries to leave? But goes on and on and on and on AND ON AND ON that he's a Lone Dog through and through? Lucky annoyed me overall as a character and was the worse one. It's hard to enjoy a book when you can't stand the main character. The book also drags on and nothing exciting happens. The book was too unenjoyable of a read for me to want to read the next book despite its cliffhanger ending. I didn't like the setting, Lucky was annoying, and they had a bad case of telling instead of showing. It just tells me all they have to do is slap on the Erin Hunter name and people will buy and read the books. Who cares about quality. Erin Hunter is just a money making machine.I gave this book a two star rating instead of one because it wasn't the worse book I've ever read and I did manage to finish it. But I still wouldn't recommend it.

An AMAZING book!
I love dogs and love how this was from a dog's point of view. I tried reading the Warrior books but got bored sooo easily. This was action packed and had .e sitting on the edge of my seat! I recommend this book to anyone who is a dog lover. AND I think that you may want to bring a bag of tissues with you when you read this book. In some parts I almost cried. Lucky is sometimes a hard dog to understand and love. The least he could have done is comforted the Leashed dogs a little, but on the other hand, I can also see why he was frustrated with them. He never experienced the nice life that his litter sister and her friends experienced. He was beat and hurt. Poor Lucky. If anyone was wondering, the Big Growel was an earthquake, not a hurricane or bombing. I think that Erin did a good job of creating the characters' of the dog's. Each dog had a different character that made them seem real to me. My favorite Leashed dog would have to be Daisy. She is too cute.

As a cat person, this series has me hooked on dogs!
I've been looking forward to this series, ever since the early days when Erin Hunter mentioned there would be a series about dogs. As a lover of Erin Hunter's cat series, Warriors, I was excited. I thought this was an enjoyable read and a great introduction book to the series. The selling point for me was their personalities and honestly worrying about them as the story goes on. My only problem I had was I wasn't too sure which way the series was going at first. The book might seem a bit strange at first! (You will see what I mean). It's worth giving it a chance and I am so glad I did because things heat up and I am completely hooked and on the 3rd book now. I can't wait to see what happens next!I personally like all the different environments of the Erin Hunter books. I love Warriors, Seekers and Bravelands with Survivors being my new favourite.

Great book!
This book is great for all Erin Hunter fans! It may not be good for people who expect a book simular to warriors, this series is about a lone dog named Lucky who survives an earthquake and helps a few housedogs, whos owners have abandond them, survive in a forest... the rest you can find out yourself. WARNING!!! Cliffhanger where you have to wait till may to find out what happens... :-)
