LOUD! When you need it.
I own one and got this for a family member. It certainly performs its function and performs it well. You can hear it underwater if you have a serious lungful of air. It is reasonably robust. The one I have personally, is on a keychain and gets abused and it is still in good working order. It doesn't use a pea that might get lost. Now for some common sense points I need to make. 1) With the exception of an emergency, don't blow it unless you have good hearing protection, it will cause ringing in the ears.2) Don't blow it indoors. Like in point 1, emergency use is one thing, but this whistle is not a toy. It's as loud as a jet engine and in an enclose space, it's even louder.3) It's a good idea to have it on a lanyard. The brighter, the better. International orange is good. If you carry it in your pocket, you want to know you have your hands on it. Same if you carry a purse or messenger case. With all that being said, it's a good investment in your safety. Pick up a few so you are never without.

120 decibels according to my Apple Watch
I am not sure an Apple Watch is accurate at this sound level. Bringing the whistle 1 inch (2 cm or so) from the watch registered 120 decibels. This thing leaves my ears ringing for hours. Now that I've examined it closely, it looks like a standard whistle with a megaphone type cone over the output to make the sound louder. There is some kide of rattling thing like a ball inside the whistle. What it is good for: emergencies. Sound over great distances. I am going to have this around my neck when I go hiking. There is a rim over the mouthpiece to help you hold the whistle in. I think that is a good idea if I have to keep the whistle in my mouth for a long time. But it is too loud to blow all the time.Maybe not so good: everyday use. Like as a PE teacher. I think it can damage your hearing. You have to try to blow slowly for a reduced volume. Also, a standard whistle has a more comfortable mouthpiece. I would not get it if I have to blow it every couple of minutes like my gym teacher used to do.Bad. The mouthpiece has a square cross-section and it is hard to get a tight seal. Would have been better if the mouthpiece is more oval. So you have to sort of pinch your mouth. I figured it out in 30 seconds.

Extremely Loud
I needed something for personal safety to carry with me when traveling and going to places where I can’t take my pepper spray. This is the loudest whistle I’ve tested. Great for personal safety. The tone is unique and really gets someone’s attention from up to 1/2 mile away. Years ago I used a storm whistle to scare away a dog that got out of its yard and came towards me.

THE LOUDEST WHISTLE IN THE WORLD - GREAT FOR AN EMERGENCY KIT BUT DEFINITELY NOT A KID'S TOY.
Haven't used yet and hope we never have to but I bought a whole bunch of items for earthquake or bugout kits for my 2 grown sons and their wives just to say, “I love you. Be prepared.” I hope no one ever needs to use any of the things I bought unless they want to or are going camping but we are in Los Angeles so it's better to be safe than sorry.I always read tons of reviews about everything I purchase. I am very diligent about buying the perfect item no matter if it’s tomatoes, a pillow, pens, a super-loud whistle or other emergency supplies. All the reviews I read on this whistle were very favorable. A lot of the reviewers commented on the loudness of the whistle so it IS NOT A TOY. But when you need to call attention to yourself if you're stuck somewhere, loudness can be your savior. That was good enough for me - perfect for the kits.I also included multiple mylar blankets, a mylar sleeping bag, mylar tent, plus everything else I could think of (light sticks, battery or hand charge radio/flashlight dealies, first aid kit, ankle support bandages, wet-dry matches, Israeli bandage (read all about it on Amazon - it's amazing), a solar camp shower, little cooking stove with fuel pellets, etc.). What I could get at dollar-type stores, I did. Saved money there. My kids have to provide their own food and water so I suggested they check Amazon because there are some excellent choices but if there is a zombie apocalypse... or worse, they are as prepared as they can be and they were thrilled that I gave them all this stuff. Great, thoughtful gifts!

LOUD WHISTLE the works under water
I wanted a very loud whistle for my dive gear. This fits the bill and you can even blow it under water to get attention if needed. The only reason this didn't get 5 out of 5 stars is that the split ring isn't stainless steel and started rusting within a day of it first hitting the ocean even though I rinse my gear thoroughly after each dive day. I've replaced the ring with a stainless one - I have a zillion of them lying around to attach to bits and bobs of dive accessories. Other than that, super duper pleased with the purchase.Did I mention this whistle is REALLY loud?

Outstanding Whistle
The Storm Whistle is truly an outstanding whistle. Why?1) It is incredibly loud.2) It is extremely well made, and appears to be very durable.3) It is moderately priced and made in the USA.The only significant con is that the Storm Whistle is a little large. But what do you want? A toy or a true signaling whistle that can save your life?By the way, I own both the larger Storm Whistle as well as the smaller Windstorm Whistle. Both are made by the same company. For whatever it is worth, I recommend that you buy the full size Storm Whistle. The larger Storm Whistle is significantly louder than the smaller Windstorm Whistle. In addition, it is important to note the smaller Windstorm Whistle is NOT an exact miniature version of the larger Storm Whistle. The smaller Windstorm Whistle is manufactured using a 2-piece "clam shell" design, which produces a visible seam that runs entirely around the circumference of the whistle. As a result, the Windstorm whistle has a seam right in the middle of its mouthpiece. The larger Storm Whistle uses a very different 3-piece design, and it appears to be more rugged and better engineered. Both are very good whistles, but the larger Storm Whistle is the one to buy if you only need 1 REALLY LOUD whistle.
