A poetry book I take on outings...to reread
Loved this book of poetry and the aware soul of the author. I've read and reread it several times; take it with me on outings, spare time rereading. Today even.(Disclaimer: this title was sent to me by a friend out of the blue. I’d heard the name of the author, that she was a poet and teacher of workshops and such. But I was otherwise clueless. No review was requested.)So, yes. I’ve heard it said and I've said it myself. A good book informs and inspires. A great book disturbs. She does all three here. Her verse and images stay with you. Maybe not every one of her 40 plus poems, but most.I’ve read her piece on The Sacred Wound a dozen times. Her riff on humility on page 75 is dear: “the somebodies are too busy polishing the mirror only the nobodies know.” God’s Slut is a favorite. As You Are is a winner for me.I’m up there in years and a traditionalist in many ways. And the author is youngish. Have to confess I was into this volume of verse a few pages or so with prejudicial bent: “Hmmm. More new age tropes yoga head cliché’s. Ho, hum.” And yet soon these thoughts fell away. I would agree, Maya Luna is a budding shaman and a fine poet. Yes. She makes you look at your soul. Yet the work does ring like a backdrop sound track for a good yoga or tantra class. But why not? All through the work she is into body, mind, soul, spirit together. So, yoga teachers should read her work for sure. I'd say.The only criticism I have is one I’d have of most poets, myself included: do more of what Shakespeare did. Work to rarely reuse a word. (Yes, we all need editors.)Again, this work is for a reader who seeks a connection with his or her own heart; who likes personal reflection and art together. With a spiritual twist. Not unlike Ladinsky’s collection: Love Poems From God.Yes, I’d recommend this book of poetry. Good nightstand reading and a good gift to send a friend.

Beautiful, powerful!
The poetry of Maya Luna is deep, powerful, sometimes haunting. Mostly it makes me feel honored, seen and grateful for the Divine Feminine in its many expressions. This book is a beautiful gift for every person identifying with the Feminine.
