Grand Central Station: The History of New York City’s Famous Railroad Terminal

There are many iconic buildings in New York City, ...
There are many iconic buildings in New York City, and among them is Grand Central Terminal, sometimes referred to as the gateway to America. More than any other historic landmark it stands as a symbol and pride for New Yorkers. This edition has been carefully researched giving the reader how the terminal replaced the former station and the incredible phasing, staging, planning and orchestration of its construction evolved. Grand Central Terminal is a jewel to be admired as much for its art, architecture and functionality. The volume includes historic reference as well as photographs that once one starts reading it, it must be done from cover to cover.

short history
I was hoping for a book, as opposed to a booklet (no page numbers in my copy). However, the information in the book accomplishes the objective. It summarizes the history of the building. Quick read.

Grand Story About Grand Central: a Grand Lady in a Grand City
A unique look at one of America’s landmark buildings. This account discusses the social, economic, and political viewpoints about the planning, the engineering, and the implementation of building and rebuilding this marvelous edifice. Grand Central Station is way more than an edifice. It is an iconic image of New York, and it serves as a central point for commuters, travelers, and tourists. It began simply enough; a station for a burgeoning railroad company that needed a switchyard, but as coal fired steam engines gave way to electric powered trains, the vision became much more grandiose since the negative qualities of coal fired were eliminated. No longer did noisy, dirty, black smoke belch out the engines; it was possible to bring many electric trains to this location and make it a necessary passenger terminal as well as a freight terminal for Manhatten. The book is understandably a little light on the technical side of the story, but it touched on it enough to give the reader an honest view of the degree of difficulty in going underground so deep in rock and water. A marvelous piece of engineering, and a great story about a grand lady in central New York City.

And all in the heart of America's greatest city, New York
An interesting and factual account of the transition from a famous Terminal to an even more famous Station. The history and the evolution of these two is married with an eye toward accessibility and technology serving as witnesses to the hard to imagine volume of passenger traffic coming into and leaving Grand Central Station. And all in the heart of America's greatest city, New York.

Pretty good book and well lresearched, I give it I 4 stars for the blank spots in the story when telling it. If you follow station history this book may be for you.

I was disappointed not seeing any of this nor other technical details
I had hoped for illustrations of the magnificent track plans. I was disappointed not seeing any of this nor other technical details. As a train enthusiast and someone who commuted into Manhattan for over eleven years, I was really looking forward to this book.
