The World War I Reader

Textbook for the general reader on World War I...
This fascinating survey of the First World War seems designed as a college textbook for the interested reader. It nicely combines first person narrative accounts with interpretative essays by historians to provide a nuanced account of a complicated war that changed everything. Readers are able to pick and choose among the selections, although reading the entire book is worthwhile and recommended.Of note, the book offers a nuanced approach to the beginning of the war, including an essay suggesting Germany really did feel boxed in by its opponents in Europe, in a situation not expected to improve with time. The discussions of the frontline and home front experiences are equally illuminating. There is a very timely essay on race relations in the American army that deployed to Europe. The book includes a small selection of maps, but no photographs or other images. Well recommended to the interested student and general reader.

Who would have known.
Who would have understood what the first world war was like unless taken from the people that lived though it? I can say this read was an eye opener and I loved it. :) I would recommend this book in any history class that covers the subject.

The book is literature in a course that deals with the First World War. The book is divided into themes and each theme contains both primary and secondary sources. Very interesting and readable book that reveals much facts from the war that are not so well known but also secret agreements made by the nations at war.
