Duke Nukem On The Go
This is another licensed game made by Tiger for the Game.Com. Based on the PC game of the same name, Duke Nukem 3D.The gameplay is from a 1st-Person perspective, where your goal is to get to the exit, which is a nuke button on a wall, hidden in the level. You do this all the while shooting any alien that gets in your way. The secondary goal is to get the high score [Frags/kills] (which is only recorded if you start from the 1st level and is recorded until you die once.) because of the implementation of a high score system (like all Game.Com games, as if this was an arcade) once you finish the last level in the game [Hotel Hell] you will loop back to the 1st level and you keep doing this until you die. If the internet function still worked, you’d be able to upload your high score on to the Tiger website. There are 12 simplified levels in this game, from the PC game. There are 2 types of parts in a level: halls and square arenas. The hall is just a straight line (like all modern FPS; Game.Com was definitely ahead of it‘s time, along with touch screen, 2 game slots, and internet connection) you can only go forward and backwards. There is auto-turning once you hit a turn, just press forward and it turns you automatically. Also at a T-Junction you can turn by pressing left or right to go down the corresponding path. The square arenas are self explanatory, square arenas you can go forward and back like the halls, but you can also strafe left and right. These areas are like shooting galleries. Aliens can only attack you face on; if they are behind or beside you they don’t hurt you, but they do block your way.Graphics are high detailed black & white sprites and backgrounds. Probably some of the best graphics on the Game.Com. Though most of the game is Claustrophobic, and feels same-y, save for a few differing objects like movie theater seats to make it look like a movie theater, or bar tables to look like a bar. Otherwise it looks like the same hall or square arena. The sounds is pretty goods, they managed to get Jon St John’s voice to do the quotes from the PC version. Though, unfortunately the Game.Com can only handle 1 sound channel at a time, so if you shoot your gun while he’s saying the quote, the gunfire will stop the quote entirely; the next sound always take priority over the previous sound. There are 4 Weapons: The mighty foot, pistol, shotgun, & rocket launcher; that is the inline of respective power, from weakest to strongest, of the different guns. The controls are as followed:D-Pad:UP: Move forwardDOWN: Move backwardLEFT: Strafe LeftRIGHT: Strafe Right(There is no manual turning, only in a hall does it automatically turn you left or right, except at a T-Junction then press left or right to go down the corresponding path.)A: Shoot forward.B: Shoot diagonal right.C: Shoot diagonal left.D: Change weapon (Standing in front of a door hold forward and press D to open door.)As you can see most of the buttons are for shooting, sort of like how Martin Riggs at the end of Lethal Weapon was shooting around a corner, blind firing from left to right and back again. In closing, I like this game, though it’s not my favorite game for the Game.Com, that would go to Resident Evil 2.
