Q: Can you use this wap with any router or must you use a cisco router for it to work?

Yes, the Cisco Business 140AC access point can work with any router and using Cisco router is not a "must". Be aware that the access point is powered via PoE (802.3af/at capable device) or power injector. Management is done through Cisco Business Mobile App (Android or iOS) or Cisco Business Dashboard. Q: Can you do mac address filtering directly in the ap or is that something that can only be managed externally?

Yes. You can restrict or permit a particular client joining your network by enabling the MAC Filtering on the AP.
