Way overpriced, partially works, but it looks good.
Photo 1 - The entry to our laundry room where a Nest Hello had been installed and the Doorbird is now.Photo 2 - The old Nutone intercom speaker removed and the cavity left behind.Photo 3 - The Doorbird installed where the Nutone speaker had been.Photo 4 - Image from the Doorbird as viewed from Blue Iris.I'll get two things out of the way right at the beginning - Doorbird's products, and I mean all of them, are way overpriced for what you get. Second item - as much complaining as I'm about to do about the product itself and the process of installing it, there were a ton of mistakes made by me. The mistakes I made however were eventually overcome and the only consequence was time.I'd had my eye on Doorbird video doorbells for quite some time. At least a couple of years. I could never bring myself to pull the trigger though. Their recent release of the flush mount base model with 1080p video finally convinced me. I already run a number of ip cameras, access points, switches, etc on PoE and the support for PoE along with local availability of the video stream are what finally convinced me. We have two entries facing the street and the entry to our laundry room is the first one you reach when walking down the walkway from the driveway. So most people, including deliveries, wind up at this door rather than the more formal double doors. The Doorbird was replacing a Nest Hello that we received from Verizon for renewing our contract. Shortly after installing the Hello, Google was kind enough to push a firmware update that contained a "feature" I didn't like - I was no longer able to access the video stream locally. The Doorbird appeared to be the best option as a replacement that would allow me to send the stream to my Blue Iris server. The preparation involved for the Doorbird was considerably more difficult and time consuming than I had anticipated. From my basement I could see right where the wiring to the old Nutone speaker went up and I thought, incorrectly, that it must be a free ride right to the speaker. Not quite. The speaker is actually directly above a heat register meaning I had to go up through the floor (though in the wall) and then over, meaning through a stud, and finally upward again through a forest of fiberglass insulation. All together it took me a week of time here and there just to get the two cat6 lines run and to make a custom backer for the Doorbird which was far more shallow than the cavity. As a temporary filler, I used some black Dynaflex leftover from another project. I wanted to make sure everything is working as intended before cementing it in permanently.Video Quality: It's fine. I mean it does the job, but there's plenty of barrel distortion when someone is actually at the door. The entry vestibule does not look nor feel so much like a tunnel as one might think looking at the image.Audio: Not good. The audio from the Nest Hello is noticeably clearer and there is almost never any issue with understanding the speech of whoever is waiting at the door. Unfortunately I still don't seem to have audio out to the Doorbird working properly. The aggravation endured while dealing with the support at the outset has me hesitant to bother contacting them again. The App: An abysmal and pathetic attempt. My standard operating procedure is to create my own admin account and then either delete, disable or rename the admin account. To my horror, the admin account is fixed - unchangeable username and the password is a fixed number of characters, limited to letters and numbers. Any subsequent users you create will have the same username as the admin account except for the last character which is incremented by one. All of this seems to be in place for their optional cloud service. What annoys me is how easy it is to screw up and neuter your Doorbird because this system of accounting and authentication is so antithetical to good or even common practice and you need to have a working internet connection in order to factory reset the device. This brings me to another issue - you should absolutely enter a valid email address the first time you onboard your Doorbird. If you don't, you won't be able to factory reset the device at all without contacting their unresponsive, lethargic, and condescending tech support. The saving grace(s) and only possible reasons for purchasing one are: - ability to access the stream locally and do what you will with the video - they have an open api that allows anybody to integrate it into a home automation system. I happen to use Home Assistant which has a functional integration in place. I am also a former Homeseer user and I remember that they have a free plug-in as well. - the build quality and appearance. The build quality does seem to be pretty solid and the appearance can't be argued with (aside from my temporary yet heinous black caulk).I really wish that I could like this thing more than I do. Considering the cost of the unit itself and the absurd amount of time I put into installing it, I feel like the breeze left my sails. To make the system more complete, an indoor video station would be called for, but at north of $500, that's completely out of the question. So now I'm constantly looking for some way to cobble together my own system, likely using an extra Google Home Hub as the viewing station.
