Chinese-English Concise Usage Dictionary

I have several of Yong Ho's books on Chinese, and this one is my favorite. I have the original 500 most frequently used Chinese characters (now out of print), all marked up, dog-eared, with pages falling out. I was afraid I couldn't get a new copy of 500, but saw that the Concise Chinese-English Usage Dictionary is an update of the original 500 book. Mr. Ho presents 500 characters, and then lists important compound words beneath each entry, including sample sentences. Mr. Ho often notes particular considerations of grammar and usage. In my opinion, this book is a must-have for a learner of Chinese. I want to purchase another spare book, so when my current Concise Chinese-English Usage Dictionary falls apart, I have a pristine backup!

This is a very helpful book for any learner of Chinese. For 500 characters you get a list of possible meanings and a list of words and expressions that use the character. This is nothing special, however, and there are many books serving the same purpose. But what really makes the book special is that for characters like 得 which serve grammatical purposes, the book delves deep into grammatical intricacies. Therefore, the book is a handy combination of dictionary and grammar reference. As the information is densely packed, however, you need to read the sentences very carefully.
