An essential read for the armchair philosopher
Accessible to the lay person and probably still is a standard text for the social scientist. I bought my copy in the late 80's and bought this one for my son this year (2015). If you are interested in gaining an insight into the role of knowledge in society and how many things came to be as they are... then this book is a good starting point that will stimulate thought and discussion.

The Existential Determination of Thought
This is not an easy read by any means,as it was aimed at stimulating academic discussion in the sixties and as such some of the theories are explained in a very convoluted and academic manner. Thankfully the authors recognised the importance of communicating their views to a wider public and provided alternative explanations and numerous and often off beat humorous examples to elucidate the theories under discussion. The book,as I see it,attempts to explain how far human interaction affects the reality we perceive and the behaviour we exhibit towards it.The methods that are employed to coerce us to be complicit with these 'symbolic universes' are examined as well as the pitfalls that such artificial human constructs produce.I'd rate this book as essential for anyone who is even slightly interested in human behaviour/psychology/phenomenology/ or sociology and although not an easy read it contains more depth than more modern 'pop science/philosophy' books and gives you an understanding of how much your self-identity is connected to the society you live within.

What we all instinctively know
This is mostly common sense written in Sociological jargon. Could have been more laconic and much simpler.
