Five Friends on an Amazing Adventure
City of Thirst is the second book in The Map to Everywhere series, by New York Times bestselling author Carrie Ryan. When the Pirate Stream floods back into the parking lot once again, and a stop sign shows up that says, “You are needed on the Pirate Stream Marril,” Marrill knows something is wrong. To find the magical Wish Machine that will save her world, Marrill, her best friend Fin, the crew of the Enterprising Kraken, and her babysitter, all have to navigate the magical land of Monerva. Will Fin finally be remembered? Will Marrill go back home? Or will everything go wrong? This book is a must-read for ages 9-12 with humorous characters like the grumpy Naysayer, and funny chapter titles like, “Things to Do While Wizards Save the World” (page 142), “The Most Fun You’ll Ever Have Dangling from a Snail” (page 153), and “Honestly, That Could Have Gone Better” (page 204). And wait till you see what happens to the babysitter’s car (page 33)!In addition, the book has lots of action-packed lines like, “And suddenly, a tangle of ropes shot out everywhere. As each rope neared the island, the strange gravity pulled it in, holding it tight in the air. Marrill was already sliding down one toward the ship. Fin gulped and jumped for another. He snagged it and held it tight,” (page 106), and “He’d completely misjudged; he was coming in too fast, and too high. He smacked against the Wall with enough force to knock the wind from his lungs. […] A shock of impact traveled up his arms, spreading through the rest of his limbs until his entire body vibrated from the force of it,” (page 151). Lastly, City of Thirst has vivid descriptions, such as, “The closer they drew to the Wall, the more impressive it became. Its face gleamed in the sun, a brilliant labyrinth of polished stone and sparkling glass and the occasional dull gleam of black metal. […] All across it, the giant gears jutted out like shelf mushrooms growing on an old tree, half visible, half buried in the Wall. Some seemed carved from glass; others were steel and bronze; still others seemed to sag and rise with each breath of the wind,” (page 119). In conclusion, you should definitely read this hilarious book about five friends on an amazing adventure. The journey that Marrill takes will show you that, no matter what, friendship is the most powerful thing of all.

Ate it up.
My 10-year old friend has eaten up this series. When I brought her the book this summer, she immediately wanted to get online with me to find others in the series. So, we purchased two of these. Apparently, it's all the rage with recreational reading for the little girls this summer out in Wyoming. A big hit!

An OK read
This was a good follow-up to the original story (The Map to Everywhere). There were times however that it dragged on, and the author got hung up on Fin's emotions and worry about Marril not remembering him. All in all, an ok story though - my son (9) enjoyed it. I would really hope though that the author comes up with words other than "cacophany" and "clambor" for the next story. I lost count of how many times we read them in this book - it got to be a running joke with my son and I. We will read the next story when it comes out.

The sinking city seems like a gimmick
Series falls apart. The sinking city seems like a gimmick, albeit an unique one, at least to me. The burning/re-burning plain is taken from other fantasy -- I have read it more than once. The character interaction is still mostly fun except for the wizard who loses his individuality. The action is hard to follow. Lots of plot holes and concepts that aren't explained. "Magic can do anything so I don't have to explain anything" hurts the book badly. Instead of clever solutions, magic is used to solve conundrums (e.g., the walk pots).

Great Plot and Characters
This marvelous heartwarming adventure. Shows Fin and Marril on discovering more about themselves and each other. This is a great second book in the series with questions still left to answer for another.
