The Puppy Who Wanted a Boy: A Christmas Holiday Book for Kids Paperback – Picture Book, September 27, 2005

When I play Santa, I visit lots of classrooms and read to children. This is the story I usually choose. (The picture features an older copy with library-binding; I prefer this newer paperback. It was one of my favorites when I was a little boy, and this update is really special. (The original book was a brown hardback, and I still have it. I love this new colorful paperback, though. The book originally had the puppy finding a home in an orphanage, a term that is no longer used. So, the updated version has changed the words and illustrations to fit the modern sensibilities.) It's been one of my favorite stories for over six decades. It's probably not a story that a 4-8 year old could pick up and read independently the first time, but it's excellent for read-alouds. And the repetition, illustrations, and format are useful for independent reading after the story has become familiar in a read-aloud situation. The concept of reversing the point of view can lead to some really special conversations about empathy. Lots of boys want puppies, but this story is about a puppy who wanted a boy!

This is the cutest story. I had the hardcover edition for my son years ago and he loved it. Now all my grandchildren love it too.

The book was in AMAZING condition! Just like I remember from my childhood! The actual book cover is made from a different material (it has a matte finish, as opposed to gloss), however, the content is the exact same, giving me a sense of happy nostalgia. Hopefully my child will love it as much as I do!

This was one of my favorite books growing up. Now that I'm expecting my first little boy and have the sweetest rescue pup I had to have this book for him. Reading it again made me teary eyed and so happy. I cannot wait to share it with my new little bundle of joy. Thank you!
