I won't be using Allinson's again...
The package I received was not "Pennine". The only indicator of where the flour originated was the mention nof the "Port of Essex", which is Tilbury. So, is this a local flour or is it "imported"?Regardless of the answer as to it's origin, this "strong" white flour certainly improved my bread. I have been using Allinson's and Hovis bread flour for years and have had no consistency. The problem with household names flour is that one doesn't know how old the flour is. It could be stuck in warehouses for many months before arriving at the supermarket shelf, which is why I have always suspected household name flour is not of good quality, even the best ones. So, I finally got brave and decided to avoid the middlemen and go for bulk, direct from the mills. Of all the choices I had, I chose the "Pennine" one because I actually believed I would get a wheat flour that was grown and milled in the Dales. Sadly, I was wrong as 1st I didn't get "Pennine" and 2nd, I don't know it's origin. Now to to the flour itself. It is very fresh, soft and strong. It comes in a multi layer "paper" bag that is also strong. Opening the bag is simple if one follows the instruction so as not to tear the top of the bag. Weightwise, it is a 16kg bag and should last a few weeks. I use around 2kg every time I bake so I'm looking at six to eight weeks before I need more. Then there is the price! As you know, flour can be costly, especially in the big supermarkets. This is because the supermarkets don't want us to bake our own products when they can sell pre-baked goods to us. So, all baking products are hyper inflated to discourage us from baking our own. The price of wheat and other produce actually fell. On the world market, due to lack of demand during lockdowns, food prices collapased. Asda prices have lowered slightly on fresh fruit / veg whereas Tesco and Sainsbury's have increased their's to maximise profit (profiteer). The same applies with flour, the prices have gone up when the market price has fell. Asda shows this as they have reduced the prices of bread whereas Tesco and Sainsbury haven't andsome brands have increased in price. So, cutting out the household brand names, cutting out the middlemen (wholesalers), cutting out the supermarkets and buying direct from mills, in bulk, is cost saving. With bulk yeast, I am now producing my home baked bread at less than 1/2 the price than when I baked with Allinson's / Hovis flour and Allinson's yeast. So, even though I don't know the origin of this flour, I will recommend it as it is of good quality, it saves money and it certainly improves the quality of home baking.

good for bread
Good fast supply, but the box was slightly damaged when it arrived. There was only a very small amount of flour which has escaped - 5g or so, so I just swapped this bag for an unopened one to use now, rather than store. The flour works well for bread, though, and I see no reason not to buy more when needed.

Great stuff for me as a newbie bread maker
First purchase of a large quantity after getting hooked on sourdough. Really lovely flour and has meant one constant variable since December.I probably make one or two loaves every 10 days and still have enough to keep me going until end April. I keep it in a large snap fastening container in a bottom cupboard and can use my trusty 1 ltr plastic jug to take out a little more than needed each time I make a new loaf.Packaging never would have been a concern until I realised how heavy this is! It is stitched and double layered and very sturdy.

Great flour for bread making
I don't know if it's the flour or if I've got better at bread making (lol) but my loaves turn out better than ever! Still, the reason I bought a sack of flour was because I got fed up of my local shops always running out when I needed some. A bit of a pain to store (I have a very small kitchen) so I decant the flour into various catering size plastic containers and keep them in the cupboard under the stairs, but otherwise excellent value

Strong bread flour that does the job well
Second purchase of a big 16kg bag of strong flour, and this time I was looking for one that was flour-ONLY, having realised my first purchase contained various other additives. Pennine Allied Mills seems to be flour-only. The bag is nice and strong, double-walled of heavy grade paper. Flour has performed well in baking, at least as good as top-brand 1.5kg bags that I've normally bought from supermarkets on the past. Very happy and will be buying again.
