For college professors seeking the how-tos of engagement to improve student outcomes
Student engagement in higher ed is complex, and often poorly defined which can be frustrating to new instructors and veteran professors alike. I used this book to learn more practical techniques for engaging today's college students. Student Engagement Techniques (2nd Ed) by Barkley and Major provided meaning to engagement with to-the-point language that meets busy instructors where they are. The authors enlighten that instructors are learning synergists who can empower students to learn via conscious efforts based in “what and how the student is learning.” In this gem, you’ll find dozens of evidence-based teaching strategies and 50 detailed student engagement techniques (SETS) to help instructors across disciplines synergize learning for their classes. The book exceeded my expectations as a resource. I wish I had it years ago! It’s not just a handbook to read once, it’s a companion I’ll consult with often in my college teaching journey.
