How many times do you crank to mix the paint?

I tend to crank clockwise 28.7 times. Then I crank counter-clockwise 15.3 times. Rotate the can 78 degrees, then I slow crank clockwise 22.4 times. Switch hands and crank counter-clockwise 7.9 times. Hope this helps.

my question is how about clean up? is it easy to clean, what about paint sticking to moving parts

I suppose it depends to some extent how thick or set the paint is that is on it. I recently removed lid from a can of high build urethane primer (automotive). It was tough to clean, but the more I cleaned it, the more I realized how simple it was to disassemble completely, clean and then reassemble. In the future I will put the lid on a nearly empty can containing mineral spirits or laquer thinner and shake it vigorously before cleaning. If you are using water based latex or something like that you could probably just spray with water hose and be fine. It's a great product though.

Will this work on a can that is already gummed up in that groove? It's plastic so the paint isn't just pulling off like with the metal cans.

Short answer; probably. If the paint has just filled the groove where the original lid locks, then yes. If it is built up well over the edge, and unevenly, then possibly not. The sealing ring on these is a wide piece of dense but malleable foam which presses down hard (with the locks on the device) against the entire ring of the paint can, so it has pretty good adaptability to a surface made bumpy by dried paint.
