Carly's Voice: Breaking Through Autism

Informative and Beautifully Written
I am currently in the process of earning my Masters and Mild/Moderate Credential in Special Education. This book is wonderful for educators who are looking to obtain a deeper understanding of non-verbal Autism (beyond what you read in textbooks and academic papers). This book really opened my eyes to see how we as educators (in most cases) are really failing our mod/severe Autistic students in the classroom. A functional curriculum should include much more than teaching our students how to read the time on a clock, teaching them how to stock shelves, sweep floors, and cook basic meals. In fact, the majority of these students should not be grouped together with Intellectually Disabled students at all...which they currently are in the public school system.Carly does a wonderful job of explaining what is happening to her body, what it feels like, what she is thinking, and how she manages her disability. I don't know if she realizes how much the information she revealed in her book will help me personally to be a better teacher for my students. I only wish that more SPED teachers would read it.Her father also did a wonderful job expressing a parent's point of view raising a child with Autism. I have two girls with Aspergers, and a lot of his words really hit home. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning more about non-verbal Autism. ESPECIALLY EDUCATORS!

Inspiring, moving, tear provoking and fun.
Absolutely wonderful!I bought the Kindle version for my 13 year old grand daughter. She, like her mom, is very sensitive to those with special needs. I'm sure that she will enjoy reading this book. After purchasing it, I was able to read the 1st chapter at no charge. That's all it took for me! I ordered the Kindle version for myself to read on my computer.I began reading last night and continued tonight. I'm up to chapter 18 and will continueto read tomorrow evening. If I didn't need sleep and have to work in the morning, I could probably finish the book tonight. It's that engrossing. It's a unique view into a world that is largely unknown to most of us. It's perceptive, witty and enlightening. I certainly hope that, after reading some of these reviews, you will pick up the book and pour over it like the rest of us have.

This book has greatly widened my perception and understanding.
I am a speech pathologist working with many students with autism for many years now. A teacher and a parent that I work with strongly recommended that I read this. Carly and her father have opened my eyes more than any workshop I have ever attended. I have a new found understanding of and compassion for the families who have this in their experience. It will change how I deal with parents and students as well as teachers. I have students right now whom I see differently after reading this.Carly's descriptions of what it is like to have autism are amazing. This young woman is amazing. She truly is a voice for autism. And what an incredible family who never gave up. I don't know that I could do what they have done. This book can capture anyone's interest. It's easy to read.I would definately recommend it for anyone who works with autism from any angle. It will change and widen your perceptions.

Life changing!
I did it!! Completed CARLY'S VOICE in 3 days!! Not because I skipped pages, but because I sat up till 2am every single night and went to school with dark circles under my eyes - but I was completely unable to put this book down. Now I have to you tube every video on her. What a profoundly life changing book - it has opened my heart with love and compassion for this cause of autism, and has opened my mind with so much knowledge on the subject right from the "horse's mouth"! Amazing book.If you haven't bought it, I highly highly recommend it. Keep the Kleenex nearby, but it will uplift you and inspire you even through the tears.. Thank you Arthur for your honesty in the book, Carly for all the insight, the emotions, the wit and the explanations... Knowledge truly is power. If I can be of help to one more child with autism because of your book, it will be worth it!Thank you, thank you, thank you both for this wonderful book!
