This is a very large chest but it is exactly what I wanted which is to store tax files a year at a time.The outside dimensions of the chest including handles, locks and hinges are 17.5 W X 13.75 D X 12.5 H inches. Another critical dimension not mentioned is the height with the lid fully open which is 25.25 inches.You might want to tape up a cardboard model to get an idea of the size and try fitting it into the spot where it will be stored.I own a fireproof lock box that I keep more important stuff in so I was not concerned about locking it. I didn't even remove the nylon zip ties after it arrived .95% of the locks in the world can be defeated with a hammer or a screwdriver or a combination of both. You could bolt a half inch thick padlock to this and one smack would break the box. Every day bolt cutters and reciprocating saws are used to defeat padlocks that cost as much as this box.Sturdiness is ultimately a factor of price.Like the automakers who led the way in making plastic look like metal be warned that the "aluminum " looking trim is plastic. This is not a solid metal box and the price reflects just that.It is well made, handy and does the job for me.I It also works in one direction for letter size and the other way for legal size files. There is a slight disadvantage to the letter size size since you have to open the lid completely to remove a file. Depending on where you store this box that could be a factor since you may have to take it out completely and then turn it to open it up.I can see a lot of other uses for this box as well ; tackle ,fishing reel storage ..any light bulky items.

Although most people use this chest to store important files/papers, it can be used to store other valuable items. There is even a felt like liner on the inside which will protect fragile items. Although it's not the most attractive looking storage chest, it's not the ugliest either. The handles on the sides come in handy when the chest is heavy. Now for the negative! As others have said, the combination lock is not so great. For one thing, it just feels cheap, kind of tinny. The numbers do not roll smooth by any stretch. I'm not worried about the security issue regarding the lock because I wouldn't put anything in it that was that valuable in the first place. It's just that it cheapens the integrity of the chest. The lock just feels like it can be easily broken. We'll see what happens in the future. The other annoyance, at least for mine is that the lid does not stay open by itself. Maybe it's because it's new and the hinges don't open up all the way. Again, I'll see if that changes in the future. I suppose if it had a better lock, it would be worth the $48 I spent on it. But as it is, that price is a bit high.Update: The lid just needed a little initial force and does open up so that it locks in place.

The Vaultz Portable File Box is exactly what I was looking for and this product exceeded my expectations. I was looking for a portable, legal sized file box that could accommodate hanging files. When I received my order including the Vaultz portable file box the day after I ordered it, I was impressed with the sturdiness and durability this product. I appreciate the aluminum frame and the rigid body of this file box. It also has substantial handles on the side which can carry a fully packed file box. The only thing I wish this product had is a third handle on the top, but I imagine this would not meet the engineering standards if the box was packed. Overall, I’m impressed with this product and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a high quality, durable, and well-made file box.

I purchased this for my daughter when she went off to college. It gives her a sense of security that her most important items will not be touched.

I received this the other day and initially I was happy with it. Then when I started to inspect it, I was very disturbed. The lock keys were poorly manufactured and felt as if they were to cave in. Second, the box itself was not as sturdy as it looked. Basically it was a painted cardboard box with shiny bolts and hinges. My 4 your old niece could make something studier out of toothpicks, a clothespin, cotton-balls, crayons, and elmers glue. Thirdly, when testing the code for my lock, the left side would not unlock; what the hell am I supposed to do with a half secure box?!?! Furthermore, the right lock did lock but, to unlock it, I didn't need the code, all you had to do was push the lock and bam, unlock. The switch to "unlock" the box would not budge. I finally figured out to unlock the left side by using a ***** hammer, #hammertime. This is not a secure box. You get what you pay for so buyer beware. Im so dissappointed I don't feel like going thru the hassle of trying to return and refund my money. I could say more but I hope you (reader) get the point. I can't rate it a 0 star because Amazon won't let me wth

Next time I need to read the small print I thought that my inserts comes inside with the box that I don’t they’re sold separately but it’s an amazing box. I like it it’s big enough to hold anything you need. A lot of information. A lot of files.
