Q: After about 20 fires I noticed that there is now a gap between the bricks. Has anyone else noticed this?

Don't keep your stove so clean. There will always be gaps, but they fill up with ash and it is fine. Ash is probably a better insulator then the brick. If you leave some ash in your stove the brick will last longer.

Q: What's the difference between these bricks and Rutland firebricks? Seems like same size, but Rutland is much cheaper. thanks

I’m a chimney sweep and have serviced lots of quadrafire stoves. It’s important to use the pumice bricks on a quadrafire stove as they have a greater insulation value, this protects your stove, maintains its clearance to combustible raitings, allows the stove to reach secondary combustion thus maintaing your efficiency. The Rutland bricks will not do any these. Having had both the quadrafire and Rutland bricks in my hands, the quadrafire are about 1/2 the weight, due to the amount of air trapped in the brick providing the insulation value. These bricks are a direct replacement and work great.
