The Black Swan

It very much reminded me of Robert Lewis Stevenson‘s style of writing and and is reminiscent of Treasure Island. Very enjoyable

I enjoyed every page in this fun story. I would highly recommend reading this book if you are a fan of great adventure stories.

Priscilla Harradine, who has youth, beauty and her own personal fortune, is on her way back to England from the West Indies. She is accompanied by Major Sands, a close associate of her deceased father, who has appointed himself her protector, and would really like to marry her money. A new passenger boards their ship, a tall modish Frenchman, Charles de Bernis.The next occurrence is an attack by pirates, their leader Tom Leach the most brutal pirate of all. When it turns out de Bernis is a former buccaneer, the plot thickens. The reader can look forward to wonderful swordplay... rapacious pirates hungry for gold and bloodshed and the delectable Priscilla... the cunning stratagems of Charles de Bernis... the dunderheaded behavior of the major... some excellent advice on how to win a sea battle... and delightful romantic passages.The major swears most amusingly ("Stab my vitals!") when annoyed or astonished, which he often is. Priscilla is a model of intelligence and courage in adversity. As for the pirates and buccaneers, they are the stuff of Hollywood. No wonder several of Rafael Sabatini's books were made into movies.This book was tremendous fun from beginning to end.

I found it to be a real interesting tale of pirates along the likes of "Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk", which I have both on DVD and book form. I enjoy them and it helps to unwind after an extremely tiresome day. I highly recommend it.

Making sense from another point of view

I love this author. The writing is so good and the characters are so likable. The adventures are fraught with danger and are romantic at same time. I’m so glad I rediscovered Rafael Sabatini.

Romance and chivalry on the high seas! One of Sabatinis best novels! There are very few authors thatcompare to his excellence!

Been reading it over every so often for 50 years. The movie with Tyrone Power was a simplified version but still a classic.
